If you dont know why than the species is just probably not for you. I would rather keep one personable fish than 30 fish who could care less what I'm doing. In the past i tried keeping a JD and it was skittish and hid all day and still tore the other fish to shreds so had to be kept alone. People thought i had a pet log in the tank because all he did was hide. The RD is mean too but at least he comes up to me and my GF swears he loves her...lol
Cichlids are a matter of preference. Some people like Wet Pets, some people like Mbuna, some people are into Discus... and so on and so on...
well i dont got a single fish but if i could i would love to have the midas to be the star..but yea people look at them cool cause it is pretty much like a dog but it lives in water..that is what makes me like solo fish..one of the reasons im sure people will give you..
LOL yeah i would have severe MTS if my budget allowed for it lol, but yeah like said its all about personal preference, some like one large interactive wet pet while others like lots of fish swimming around and interacting, its just up to what you like, if you dont like your single midas than go and get a couple smaller cichlids that could comfortably live in a 75g together. i personally really regret getting rid of my midas and really wish i could get him back but he was a very mild guy and could be housed with tankmates (at least he was when i got rid of him at about 6-6.5in)
People like to think that a single fish becomes more "personable", "attached" or dog-like... even though this is far from reality. What happens most of the times is the fish either 1. wants to kill you, chase you out of its territory or 2. knows you will drop food in the water. Fish aren't dogs, they aren't "greeting" you or begging you to pet them no matter how much it looks like it.
For me there's nothing like a nice community of aggressive fish interacting with each other... and they still come up for food.
