AQUAMONSTER:
I can understand your issue. If you find what works for you, is a good thing, I would not change.
Let me see if I can explain this without hurting someone's feelings.Trying to help someone else see, appreciate and understand your point of view, of being thrifty, might be a little difficult to do especially when they turn a deaf ear to your advise, your credible and legitamate reasonings as to why. There are those similar to your friend, who do things like what he wants to do with the FX 5, for a number of reasons. I will name just a few possibilities for you:
1] It's a novelty item. He wants one because everyone else has one.
2] Maybe to be condescending or arrogant. It's possible he just wants to boast or show-off and being the resident BMOC when actually he's a snot-nosed spoiled brat, who thinks and feels, he's better than everyone else. Needless to say, he might even need an seriously overdue attitude adjustment.
3] One-up-manship: You may have an AC110 for example on your tank. FX 5's are suppose to be, (in this theory only), way more cool than an AC110. Your friend may think it is, more cool. So, he feels he has to do you one better. I feel it's really more a matter of taste and what a person can afford.
Maybe he doesn't care about the ongoing costs of maintenance supplies for his tank. But it's his money. If that's how he feels and it's what he wants to do, you can talk until you loose your voice. It may not do any good. But if he's worth really having your friendship, then I would hope he'd stop and listen, understand, and appreciate what you are trying to do, in helping him.
I hope this bit of advise helps your understand your friend a little better. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me and I will try to help as much as I can.
