Why are Goldfish so underrated in the fish keeping hobby?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's the poor keep that "feeders" get, not really anything that can be contributed to the fish themselves then.
Like I said, these feeder goldfish are no different from the fancy goldfish. Unless the feeder goldfish receives better treatments, they are not robust or hardy fish as they have health issues. Once they got out of bad conditions, they're robust.

I personally like goldfish(comets) and always try to keep some. I currently have six. The fact that they are cheap is a plus.Your telling me. I had 2 males reach full maturity...they were awesome. They had long fins with humps on their head. I was downsizing and had to get rid of them. The LFS freaked out saying they never seem them like that or that size. The were more then happy to take them. They didn't last long there and I never found out what they sold them for.

Edit: they were better then this

I've seen these full mature male convicts few years ago, they got sold very quickly and it's not cheap either. Pink ones were very stunning and all of them have humps and long flowing fins. Personally if most posters on here, had seen them they'll give these convicts a new home already.

A lot of people see them as brain dead 3 second memory throw away feeder fish, why is this? Literally they are the cutest things and have loads of personality. There are so many different varieties of goldfish especially the fancy varieties and they are so clumsy and docile. I love there fat round bodies and there cute telescopic eyes, I just wanna take them out of the water and cuddle them 0_0 I'm weird like that

why are they so under rated though? They imho have the most personality out of any other fish.

I think one reason is taste (not culinary, aesthetics). And, as they say, an argument over taste cannot be had. But taste is a delicate creature. Often fleeing. Ever evolving. Similar to fashion in a big way. Culture and all that occurs in a society and the societal history creates current taste. It is inherited from our parents and shaped by our friends, what we read, watch, contemplate, what we are told is good or bad, beautiful or ugly, etc. It involves lots of prejudice too. It often flows from prejudice that common, lowly and plain things are overlooked, thought of as boring and few are those who see beauty in modest places. For one of those folks, there are 1000 of us who, like a fish, are lured by something flashy, cool, exotic, desirable by many. Let it be possessions, people, pets...

I think another reason is along the same lines that push us to get new fish and new, bigger tanks. We get bored. We need to get re-excited. It's a temporary fix with no end in sight. I am talking average statistics. Most certainly there are exemptions to any rule. It may be argued that this reason is too a part of the multifaceted taste - a whimsical thingy that may be a siren.

Electric Blue JDs, fancy guppies, fancy strains of discus, fancy strains of livebearers and flowerhorns have health issues, not just fancy goldfish. Plecos and larger catfish produced a lot of wastes, no different than a goldfish.
I would not say that any of the fish you listed are any more popular than goldfish.

And your point is? At my LFS they have more selections on flowerhorns, fancy livebearers, plecos and electric blues than goldfish. All they have is fantails, black moors and feeder goldfish.

redear hasn't posted in this thread????

ts has to be redear's troll acct
I remember Redear made references to having health issues in some past posts, hope he's OK
