Why are we never satisfyed? Natural vs Manmade

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think some of us want to keep fish that other people can't. We're all on a quest to seperate our collections from Joe-Shmo by hunting down the rarest, most unique fish we can find.

yup I agree there. To some this hobby is a statement.

I like the plain ol' normal colored and shaped fish. I will admit that the yellow colored wild arowana that Wes imported recently are very nice though.

Let's take that fish as an example. Let's suppose that was the phenotype for the species, let's suppose someone then comes along with a "silver arowana", the reaction is now WOW I gotta have one of those! Why? Same fish we now take for granted would be the flavor of the month fish. That's my point, we are never satisfied, maybe that's a good thing it drives the hobby, maybe it's not because breeding for the same trates generation after generation weakens the gene pool and creates undesirable side effects or further mutations that are then proliferated. Almost everything we do involves some type of god complex that's not the point, we've bin doing that since we turned wolves into dogs. I just find the whole thing contradictory. Think about this, "I love arowanas they are the absolute coolest fish in the world" Now lets change them.

I think a better question is why do people care so much about what the next guy is keeping and continue to measure themselves against them? For some of you, this hobby is the biggest genitalia measuring contest.

I get what I like and could care less to join the elitist club where price tag and rarity controls my interests. I just like seeing and taking care of fish, my fish. I'm too busy enjoying the hobby to stick my nose up at people. Of course you're going to say "you would get rare fish If you could afford it" but actually no, I wouldn't. I'd rather donate to a good cause then fatten a vendors/sellers bank account.

Now I'm outta here before redearsunfish turns this into a pro fancy goldfish thread

I kind of go both ways on this topic- I want to be a purest and appreciate the pure forms most but you can not deny the beauty of some of the "man made" morphs. I have less issue with proliferating a natural morph ie blue dempsey, then hybridization but see the appeal of all.

Being a ray guy- I am an avid purist thinking that it muddles the hobby not knowing what mix of species your ray is and down the line we lose pure species. But on the other hand sometimes i see a hot Hybrid ray and i am like DAMN- i need that....lol

The other side of this discussion has to be mass appeal- and what i mean by that is the avg person- not the true hobbyist- and the vibrant colors of some of the hybrids and morphs will be more appealing to the general public which will in turn strengthen the hobby by bringing in new blood.

I stand on the issue of color morphs delicately...I don't find that as bad as body morphs...that just bothers me. Hybrids are also an on-the-fence issue for me...I definitely see the issue of losing the ability to tell whether you have a pure breed or not after so long of mixing and matching.

I agree. I prefer native tanks. very beutiful fish can be caught in your backyard. I caught a green sunfish and some of my friends thought i had got him from a lfs for big money.
