Why are we never satisfyed? Natural vs Manmade

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep a flowerhorn in my main tank in the living room. I like the look of flowerhorns plus it's a conversation starter for people that show no interest in fish keeping. When my mom comes to my house she is always looking and asking questions. She has seen the countless fish I've kept over time and never showed interest in any of them. My gf also really likes the flowerhorn. Now down in the basement I keep fish that I like. I have an oscar, jd, gt, and a jag that are for my viewing purposes. I'm now looking for a high quality red texas and was possibly looking at getting one of the amphilophus citrinellus wild San Francisco libre from rapps. I collect what I like regardless if it's man made or naturally occurring.

I like what I like. Wild caught or captive bred. I'm not a purist either way.

I however cannot justify paying more than $20 for any fish. I like to keep my stock simple. I have mostly common fish. I can't enjoy this hobby if I'm too broke to pay for it.

Imo a $5 or $12 angel fish is just as interesting to look at as one that costs 10x that.

I agree, my silver arowana was $25 my Jardini was free and my Altums I traded for. I don't spend ridiculous amounts of money for fish but that's not the point of the thread.

There is no right and wrong answer, to the question. I don't like as and example Koi angelfish, I would own none before I would have designer Angelfish, Discus, Flowerhorns or some odd variant of an Arowana. I also keep what I like, I don't care what anyone else keeps. It's their money, their tanks and their fish. What prompted this thread is we (human-beings) always seem to think different is better, we want to be unique and different, stand out and be special by having something the other guy doesn't have. I think that's what drives the mutant craze. Like I said earlier in the thread if a silver arowana was a new development there would be hobbyist that would mortgage their house just to get one. Think about that, it's true a plain jane much maligned Silver Arowana would be the hottest thing on the market. I find the whole concept to be nuts when I look at it from this perspective.

I paid $65-$70 for polys on 3 occasions, only because I didn't want to get them online during winter and because the best lfs around me has extremely healthy fish. That's the only time I've paid that much for single fish. Its kind of interesting the argument of wanting to stand out within people. I feel most people love to stand out simply to fit in better. Humans are herd animals, and if something makes people like them more, they will do it haha.

I collect designer fish. I like them....... I love their wild caught counterparts, and "regular" captive bred counterparts just as much........ For me, building a collection is an art form..... keeping a balance between wild, cb, and designer..... I collect bichirs (not aros) and I love my wilds just as much as my other fish....... the thirst for some to make their collections "better" will always be there, designer fish or not...... BUT for the true hobbyist, IT IS NOT to make their collections better than someone elses, IT IS to improve OUR OWN COLLECTIONS. .........99% of the people who collect designer fish do it out of PASSION, believe me it's not an EGO thing..... if it were, the money we spend would be better utilized on a nice car or penis enlargement surgery.....

What many here don't realize is, the most amazing collections (which yes does include designer fish) are NEVER posted on MFK........ why? ..... something to think about........

..... As far as NOT being satisfied, it's the people that are NOT satisfied that push the hobby forward whether it be finding a new species out in the wild or desiring something new....... it is those people that come up with CRAZY filtration systems, bigger tanks,.... pushing the envelope...... NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS....... just something to think about......

I think you might have a point. BTW I don't think $65-$70 is ridiculous money.

To me Hundreds or thousands is crazy money for a fish, to some it's not and hey what the hell if you got it spend it. Right?

All points well taken. Comment I put in bold letters I can't answer. That's like if a tree falls in the woods kind of question.

Imo I don't really care how much a fish cost. If I want a specific fish like a quality flower horn I go into it knowing I'm gonna pay a few hundred. Some fish are ridiculously priced though. I look at it as an investment. I spend 300 on a fish that I really want and I'm going to keep, and it gives me years of enjoyment.
