Why did it die

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's my first time using canister always have hob so I don't want to take it apart cos I don't know how to set it up
?
threads can be found on 'how to' maintain every filter. or post a thread here about your filter model.
if you aren't gonna learn that, just return to using HOBs and get rid of canister.
or all your fish will die.
with enough AC110s most tanks would be ok.

Sooner or later you will have to.. On internet find instruction manuals (if they were not included with canister) but usually its so easy - detach adapter, open clips, take bags out, wash in used aquarium water, bags in, close clips, attach adapter..done :)

Get a battery operated air pump just in case of futuer power outages. It will help prevent oxygen deprivation during a power outage. A cheap ~$4.00 will run fine on double D batteries. They are extremely noisy though.

I've had long power outages that lasted 4- 8 hours, and not in one instance has my fish died due to "nasty water" coming out of the canister (which only get serviced every 3-4 months). I also never had a mini cycle as a result of the canisters being off that long.

I don't believe the folks saying it was probably the filters. You don't have to service a canister (unless it's really undersized) every 1-2 weeks to avoid "gas and poison being flushed into your water column."

Your filters would have to be REALLY REALLY bad for that to happen.

You likely didn't have enough disolved o2 in the water due to not having water turnover for 12 hours. Next time, try disrupting the water during the power outage to keep disolved o2 in the water column.

asking his canister maintenance was to cover all aspects of the overall factors.
a non-maintained canister becomes an UNfiltered tank, & at worst it is dead and pouring stored filth inside a tank.
you know that.

Really?

Shakes head :wall:

Maybe a little more time on learning about what happens when canisters or any filtration that does this will do to a tank. If you buy that lack of O2 to the main tank will kill whats in the tank, then why cant you buy that the same lack of O2 in the filter is even worse..

It can and it does happen.

I don't know how long it would take for a filter to get to that point... But I have to believe for a canister filter to get so bad that the tank actually becomes unfiltered that the filter wouldn't even be running anymore. We're talking years not months on that one.

sigh.
People are commenting within context of all the info about his tank size, stocking, water changes, etc.
so really, you sure?
