I think the problem is that we never can really know if we like a fish until we see it in person. Fish that were thought to be dull and boring are suddenly stunning and interesting in the tanks at the store. Heck, I bought some buffalo heads once and I don't even like Africans.
auctions/swap meets are what kill me. I come home with all kinds of stuff I know nothing about and I usually end up bringing it back to the next auction or calling up the locals who didn't attend and asking them if they want to buy some fish I overbought on during my car ride home lol.
Like last saturday when I picked up 5 1" haitains for $2. Did I need 5 odo's? Do I have room for 5 odo's? Are odo's sweet? No, no, YES!
I've learned to impulse buy less but it still happens.

I understand. Its kind of like the guy who does drugs, who knows its not smart to take the next hit of crack, but they just can't help it. They may learn to deal better with it after years of addiction, but never trully beat it. Does that about sum it up? In other words you cant beat the addiction, just try to control it to a point?

You will buy lots of fish and lots of tanks, then you will get burned out and drop the hobby, seen it many times
Buy a few tanks and a few fish you really like and ENJOY them, if you make it work you will burn out

i think we all get or have had the compulsion to buy any and all fish cos there are so many types.
some of us have wives that very quickly curb any of those impure thoughts of impulse buying an 8ft tank and umbee instead of buying her a new car.
i agree with the above though, if you go too fast you will burn out and give up the hobby but if you take your time then over the years your collection will grow and so will your love for the hobby. if you gradually work to your "holy grail" then the achievement will be more satisfying.
