Why does every1 like cichlids?

Why do people even like fish, in general? They're so dumb and just swim back and forth. You can't play with them and take them for walks, like a dog.
Unique and remarkable behaviors, their coloration, most are very social and have good personalities, are energetic, most will swarm to the glass when your nearby, relatively intelligent, most are pretty aggressive for their size....and so on 
I like catfish, regardless thats irrelevant to my question.

You say you don't understand the hype, but you also don't know much about them. That's your problem. We could sit here and tell you why we think cichlids are so great, but until you've kept them, you'll never know.
