Why does every1 like cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like cichlids best because theyve helped me to diversify my portfolio as well as building and maintaining the network infrastructure for my business.

But seriously...if you like IR sharks/catfish, this question is pretty silly. Is it really that hard to understand why people would like them if you have an interest in some other type of fish?

Sounds like youre trying to start an argument or get a rise out of people that like fish that do stuff besides eat other fishs poop and hide from light.

post much?

I like cichlids because they are active, and come in a wide variety of colors and such. I really liked the idea of having a 'wet pet' but most I liked (I really fancied Fahaka Puffers, origional intention of my tank in fact...) however, having a lurker fish in such a large tank, and it being the focal point of our living room was just not... practical. Everyone who saw it always seemed confused by the lack of activity - and what appeared to be an empty tank of water. And it wasn't pretty, at that - due to the large size of the fahaka, and limited ability to move about if it had much for decor.

We've now moved onto cichlids, which we now have breeding as well. The colors and movement are very relaxing. I miss my water puppy, but he deserved more than I could give him anyways.

Another bonus: My boss breeds cichlids, and has 5 cichlid tanks... He's always looking for people to give them to for REALLY REALLY CHEAP. LFS may charge close to $30 for a fish, when I could get one even PRETTIER from my boss for $5. Plus, he's going to give me 5 more females, 2 are currently holding too - on top of the 8 he already gave me in exchange for a 25 long tank. :)

Can't beat it!

I like catfish, regardless thats irrelevant to my question.

Some people don't understand keeping catfish... They're mostly a fish I'd like to eat, in fact that's what i'm having for lunch. They don't have great colors and are relatively lethargic.

There are a few species of catfish that I like and most happen to not be monsters. Syno's are manageable in size and tend to be pretty active. The larger cats That I've seen just seem to sit there. They're impressive, but I like my fish to swim.

Your question about cichlids is easy to answer for those who keep them but difficult to comprehend unless you actually get your hands on some.
They're beautiful- with a wide array of colors or patterns, they're interactive- some with their owners some with other fish, their behavior is fascinating and if you've ever kept them long enough you know exactly what they're "saying" to each other with a flick of a fin or a flaring of gills. They are intelligent fish, Their aggression is impressive, Their parental qualities are second to no other fish. I could go on and on.

Why do people even like fish, in general? They're so dumb and just swim back and forth. You can't play with them and take them for walks, like a dog.

Its posts like this that make me wish we had a "Like" function on this forum!!!

Hey we all have our pet hates, I can't stand peacock Bass. Ugly, boring and a waste of otherwise good space. but obviously lots of people love them, its called Opinion and this guy has just as much of a right to hate cichlids.

I agree, each to their own.

I can't understand why anyone would give tank space to Severums or Discus, but there ya go

Guys i really feel i was misunderstood here, i just wanted to know why so many people like them, thats it. Some of you misunderstood my lack of knowledge as sarcasm. Im here to learn and share what i know so we can all enjoy the one thing we all have in common, fishkeeping.

/edit: i was on my iphone in a spot with bad service when i created/replied earlier so sorry for any double posts and/or lack of making sense (i hate the onscreen keyboards on these)
