Why does my tank smell soooo bad???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What kind of sand is in the tank?

I used Play sand from HomeDepot in a 40g tank and the "organic" makeup in the sand started to decompose in the tank... Horrendous odor... rotten eggs to rotten flesh... nasty...
Obviously I removed the sand.

I also have a 20g long with Tahitian moon sand that has never stunk going on 8 months now no snails or loaches....

Seriously Brad? I didnt answer your question well enough about the Tetra POS filter having carbon already?! And dont add media bags to that filter. The design sux, so any additional media just causes the water to overflow out of the HOB back into the tank without being filtered. Basically reduces your flow to nothing. Putting a sponge over the intake tube strainer is the ONLY modification I've been able to make to these things without overflowing.

This thread is just like your others, man. 6 or 8 pages of you arguing with everyone about how you have it right, but are still having whatever problem. Some of these people have been keeping fish longer than you've been alive, so listen up when they speak. I'll summarize your answers for you real quick here & be on my way.

1- Your filtration is NOT enough. Garbage filter (I have them too), not enough flow, & with only 1 intake you are only filtering half the tank because of the 20Long shape.

2- Cycling with a big messy fish like your Oscar is R-tarded. Especially in a 20Long.

3- Double your tank cleaning routine. Its not enough.

4- We know you're on a budget. We all have budgets, so check out DIY if you cant afford the right equipment, or just do more maintenance. Elbow grease is free, brutha.

wow... seriously??

not arguing with anybody... and BTWm this is pretty much the only thread I have over 2 pages...

And ANOTHER thing..

Take the time to read what I have actually posted...

Im 16 and I hate to say I pay more attention to detail than u...

IDK how many times I have said the 20 long has 1 EBJD in it, and it is CYCLED already.

The 55 has the oscar in it... NOT THE 20!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, The 55 wasnt even a new startoff.. it had water from my other tanks in it and a old HOB from one of them also...

The only thing "new" in that tank was the Pool Filter sand substrate so I wasnt really "cycling" the tank as I had plenty of BB in the water already, I just used that term because of lack of a better word at the time and I didnt think everybody on this forum had something to get upset about and flame newcomers...

Before you go mouthing off at people, please take time to read THOROUGHLY what I have said and you will CLEARLY notice no arguing. I am taking other peoples opinions and insights into accounts, giving them my side of the story and taking advice very openly because I realise that these people are VERY good at what they do...

Sorry I misquoted your stocklist. I've seen & commented on most of your other threads. I stand by my statement.

Vacuum the gravel and do at least 25% water changes each week.

Thats what I do...

IDK why I would need to double the amount of water I change to 50%:screwy:

lol... you guys... this thread is pretty much closed... read back a few pages where it says I fixed the smell

Lol you can hate me for adding this but I just wanted to share.

I used to feed flakes to my feeder tank and it stunk like what you said. And I use no carbon. Now the feeders are gone and no more smell.
