Why I hate chain store.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am not trying to start any issues.. but c'mon now. Which fish are being abused? Are you joking? cruel truth is fish are a commodity just like the ones in the freezer at the store along with the frozen chickens and beef cuts. If you get riled up by fish in too small or a tank, or owners not knowing enough before buying or fish death at all then this hobby is not for you.

The hypocracy I see here is amazing... people will actively try to get a person selling fish fired or possibly be brought up on criminal charges and then probably go throw a few comets to their cichlids to watch them get their eyes chewed off and call it a day.

Gotta pick your battles in life and this is a dumb one to get upset about. Bajillions of fish die every day because of people or other fish. Sad but true..

I spend lots of time at my local Petsmart just browsing about, and I'm happy to hear every person that asks for a common pleco, the sales person asks how big their tank is. I bought one a few weeks ago and they asked me about my tank size. At my LFS they'll deny sales before sending fish to their death.

Sure fish die every day due to human or predator causes, but would you sell a person 100 cats who wants to house them in an apartment? There's a difference between intentionally feeding a fish to a bigger fish and buying a fish that will be stunted for months, if not years, in poor conditions.

Agreed

Oh well, and to OP: If you want better quality for the animals then do what I do. Buy certified freerange eggs at the grocery store even though they cost a lot more. Only buy organic milk products etc.. and DON'T SHOP AT BIG CHAINS if you don't like them. Go to a good LFS EVERY TIME, not just when it's convenient or you hadn't adequately planned on having food available for your pets. You shop at the big stores? Don't complain.

As much as people hate to hear it I think this is true and he's correct think of how fish are raised on fish farms to adult hood just to be killed for human consumption and to be sold in food stores why is this fishes life any different then a fishes life in the pet trade or think about the amount of fish that die just from being caught and shipped ...if people weren't looking to buy rare exotic fish no fish would die and they would all be swimming threw there river system or ocean..you don't see the numbers that die threw shipping and handling you just see the fish that make it and are for sale so if you want to talk about this is cruel and that is cruel I could simply say people pulling fish out of their natural habitat putting them in a styro box and sometimes shipping them half way across the world to just end up spending the rest of its life in a glass cage is cruel....am I a hobbiest yes do I think what people do to fish and how they take care of them and treat them is sometimes cruel yes but that won't change ..now I'm not saying people don't have the means to give there fish a good life either the majority of MFK is more then qualified to house the fish they keep and care for them properly and actually give them a good quality life but MFK is very very small percentage of how many people that actually keep fish in this world
So honestly I think hobbiest should just take it with a grain of salt because it will never stop and it will never change no matter how much you rant and rave about it your not going to Change someone's mind your not going to change what people do and this will just go on as long as the hobby goes on..there may be a few people that are willing to listen and learn and actually do the right thing but the vast majority of people are just set in their ways and don't care what you have to say...just my 2 cents

I agree and treat my pets the same. I absolutely love my pets and take good care of them. Usually they die from old age or some health problem related with old age like cancer etc.. My post was not about general care of pets, but being realistic about the world we live in. Yes to us as individuals it's a hobby and a pet. As an industry at whole, it's a joke to try to imprint our behaviors we personally choose and get upset and try to take action/revenge the perceived mistreatment by others. I know a lot of great Fish store employees do an amazing job. There are also just dumb people that are going to do dumb things that I myself wouldn't.

I'm certainly not saying it's right, but it happens and you DO have to accept that unless you want to go on a vigilante crusade against the pet industry and animal care everywhere. Not to mention if it weren't for the desire for tanks and new and pretty fish all the time, none of these fish would be alive. See a tank full of pretty guppies? Awesome! Do you know how many tens of thousands were likely culled to get that one tank full of fish that look that way? It's an industry and business and there is a lot of waste.

Again, why get upset about one fish death if they don't all bother you? "Well that one has a sticker on the tank that says its a feeder therefore it's life is less important.. it was made to die..." people are funny.. everyone draws their lines of right and wrong in different places and for different reasons and anyone who doesn't agree is "Wrong".

It actually does bother me. I don't want to see any creature die in the name of a hobby. The way fish are bred by the by the tens of thousands just to be culled or sent to your fish store to die is a lot like a puppy mill. I think it's wrong when a hobbyist cross breeds fish just to see what they look like and then culls the entire spawn. It's just my view.

I grew up on a farm and have absolutely no problem raising an animal for food and killing it. But nothing goes to waste. I've seen first hand a lot of animal cruelty. I have many memories of these events that I can't shake not to mention the cruelty I have seen in my occupation. I am very aware of these things. I have witnessed the accidental and intentional death of more animals and people than I care to mention . To me it is unpleasant for any reason even for food even though it's necessary.

Like I said before I did not say that you where Wrong. I said that this was my view. Most people at least partially base their beliefs and values on their past experiences and that is exactly where my beliefs come from. I will not force feed my beliefs to anyone but I will defend and explain them when needed.

I don't look down on the sets of values that most people follow. I simply accept the fact that we are all different and no matter what I or anyone else says if you don't understand everything surrounding the point of view you will never completely agree. You're right it's simply crazy to think that taking things into your own hands by getting upset or belligerent will fix anything but simply going with the flow won't fix anything either. Sometimes just a simple courteous suggestion or comment will be enough. I am a firm believer in the say you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Again, this is simply my point of view. Sorry for rambling.

I think that a lot of people on this site, myself included, are guilty of using feeder fish for some species. Is that goldfish or minnow (or in my case neon tetra cus we dont have feeders in uk) less important or less worthy of life than our prize specimen? Sure they are cheaper and smaller, maybe they dont have the same personality? There will always be a degree of cruelty in what we do and as someone stated, a certain amount of hypocrisy within us. I think the issue in question, which is the good or the bad of the chain stores, is more to do with taking care of the species that we do value... I am sure that there are good chain stores as much as i know there are bad. I know it is difficult for managers to find people that are willing to work for minimum wage that have an inkling about the hobby. I am also sure that there will always be people that are willing to buy a (eventual) 3 foot fish for their 2 foot tank, knowing full well the result. None of this will change and there is nothing that can be done about it, other than laws that will ruin things for everyone ie blanket bans or restrictions (read snakeheads usa for example) As I stated before, the uninitiated expect that going to a fish store they will be dealing with people who know what they are talking about. So why research if you are dealing with experts? Mr Smith doesnt know the guy working at (insert fish store here) knows nothing about fish and is resentful of his job because he gets paid a pittance. The manager of that store has his hands tied by head office who wants more for less money all the time. So because Mr Smith doesnt know better and employee couldnt give a fiddler's fudge poor mr oscar ends up in a 20 gallon tank. BUT, why oh why can all fish shops label their fish. Species, requirements, size, size of tank required etc etc. A little pic of the fish in question to avoid confusion. It wont stop Mr i dont give a ****, but it would take the responsibility off of the workers and it will give the people who want to do the right thing some info that they can use... Ok so someone would have to do a little work to set it all up, make little cards or whatever, but once they are made they are there to use again and again. It would take a lot of the randomness out of purchases and employess who dont have the knowledge can refer to the cards 'how big is your tank sir? 50 gallons you say? well im afraid that this here pacu needs a tank that is many times that size' I know it isnt perfect and it relies on people wanting to do right, but it would cut down on a lot of shocked people that come home one day and find their fish doesnt fit in their tank any more...

I agree I remember once a guy was selling a Malawi Blue Dolphin I asked him what fish it was just to know if he knew and all of a sudden he gave me attitude and its a dam cichlid then he was telling people how yellow labs get as big as Oscars and I was like Dafq

You make good points that I almost 100% agree with. Maybe it's just a difference of opinion on pretty high level that I accept that you have to take the bad with the good in this hobby. That doesn't mean you have to like what goes on. -I- don't like the mass cullings of any living creature unless it's going to be used to the fullest. -I- don't think comets are any less of a living fish than some cichlid or oscar, but fish eat fish! We can try to educate people and bring up the standards at least within our social groups.

Thats why I like MFK. :) I learn more all the time on here and I think it and sites like it bring a lot of great info to people, but they have to want that. Sadly most people won't or don't care.
