Why I hate chain store.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ I disagree somewhat... if someone is new or inexperienced and doesn't realise how stores like these potentially operate then they can be easily mislead without realising. people should he able to go to a store and trust the word of the 'experts' working there. stupid as it may sound, some people I know still do not have computers and would not know the wealth of knowledge available through them. when I first started fishkeeping the internet was new and I had no access to it. my source of info was the people working in the stores I shopped at. Unfortunately sometimes it is only through getting bad advice that people can differentiate between the good and the bad. imo people working selling any animal should be well versed in its requirements and the store should be held accountable if they are not. Unfortunately we all know it doesnt work that way

When I worked at Walmart my managers told me to tell people how large the Oscars & Pacu got,( YES! When I worked there Walmart sold Pacu's) but that's all I could do was tell them the size they got and recommend them buy a larger tank. Wether or not they had a 30 gallon or not though I was not aloud to deny them a sale. All I could do was give them my knowledge about it. Don't even want to say how many Pacus n Oscars I had to sell to people with 55 gallon or under tanks :(

I'm with Ian. Nobody knows what questions to ask when they go to do something anyway. Even after you research, you don't know all the questions and obviously won't know all the answers. Trial and error would have to begin and unfortanetly, the oscars have to bear all the error they can.

The happy in a small tank upwards of the walmart employee dilemma..... I honestly was told these things when I started out. It wasn't till I got on here that I even thought different because I had a friend with a 10 gallon that had almost as much fish as water. (3) 8" goldfish...(2) 5" gouramis and some bala sharks. His mom stayed feeding them all day and he fed them at night too. We were all about 12 years old... His mom had about that much fish keeping knowledge. The fish looked happy until they started jumping to the floor.

Kavin, it would be great to have more experienced employees to serve the customer. Unfortuantely, there would only be one available in each of only the major cities of the nation. lol

The problem is finding people with the knowledge who want to or are willing to work for Min. Pay...

Naturally there are some younger members of community who know there stuff who just need a job and would be great help, but a lot of the other guys out there (for example a lot of the older peeps on MFK), have quite well paying jobs and wouldn't go work at petsmart just because they were knowledgeable in the field...

As for giving advice, i think at Chain stores giving advice can be beneficial, but at a lot of the Mom and Pop stores, i tend to be a lot more careful, because you could end up costing them a customer, which could mean the difference between keeping them afloat or failing... so in those cases, i try and educate the staff AFTER the customer is gone, not necessarily to educate them, but inform them of the information i've learnt from places like here... especially if its an LFS where i know the staff well (since sometimes it can be an innocent mistake)

Im a store manager for a chain pet store and it is very hard to find associates with good knowledge of aquatic life let alone one that will work for min wage. We are told that we are able to refuse sales if the animal is not going to be taken care of properly. For example if some one wants to put a damsel in a fish bowl. Unfortunately however if somebody wants an oscar that is 2" for there 29 gallon tank all they have to do is say that they have or will get a bigger tank. We are not allowed to tell them they are full of it even if we know they dont have or will never get the tank. They assume everyone one will want to buy there fish or that the store will buy it back when it gets too big for them. We do take fish but we do not buy them back and yes I have had people run there fish over in the parking lot to spite me for not being able to give them money for them. While the stores try to educate the best they can generally there is a couple of people at each store that have good knowledge of aquatics and when there tends to be issues is when an associate is to afraid to say they dont know the answer. At my store if everyone is trained that if they dont know to take a name and number and tell them that they will find out. In my opinion customers should take it upon theirselves to research what they are buying. Internet, library whatever but be accountable for the lives of the animals they are purchasing. The people in the store should be but one of many sources of explored info.
