Why I hate chain store.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im a store manager for a chain pet store and it is very hard to find associates with good knowledge of aquatic life let alone one that will work for min wage. We are told that we are able to refuse sales if the animal is not going to be taken care of properly. For example if some one wants to put a damsel in a fish bowl. Unfortunately however if somebody wants an oscar that is 2" for there 29 gallon tank all they have to do is say that they have or will get a bigger tank. We are not allowed to tell them they are full of it even if we know they dont have or will never get the tank. They assume everyone one will want to buy there fish or that the store will buy it back when it gets too big for them. We do take fish but we do not buy them back and yes I have had people run there fish over in the parking lot to spite me for not being able to give them money for them. While the stores try to educate the best they can generally there is a couple of people at each store that have good knowledge of aquatics and when there tends to be issues is when an associate is to afraid to say they dont know the answer. At my store if everyone is trained that if they dont know to take a name and number and tell them that they will find out. In my opinion customers should take it upon theirselves to research what they are buying. Internet, library whatever but be accountable for the lives of the animals they are purchasing. The people in the store should be but one of many sources of explored info.

100% agreed

I am not trying to start any issues.. but c'mon now. Which fish are being abused? Are you joking? cruel truth is fish are a commodity just like the ones in the freezer at the store along with the frozen chickens and beef cuts. If you get riled up by fish in too small or a tank, or owners not knowing enough before buying or fish death at all then this hobby is not for you.

The hypocracy I see here is amazing... people will actively try to get a person selling fish fired or possibly be brought up on criminal charges and then probably go throw a few comets to their cichlids to watch them get their eyes chewed off and call it a day.

Gotta pick your battles in life and this is a dumb one to get upset about. Bajillions of fish die every day because of people or other fish. Sad but true..

I'm not an animal rights activist or anything but for me its more about making sure animals kept as pets are treated the same. Whether it's a dog, and cat, bird, or fish.
I dont look at pets as a commodity...but if said pet is kept as food then its a commodity. Thats just how i look at it. I'm not saying either of us is right or wrong... Just my opinion.

If you owned a store and had to weed out the potential customers without adequate space your talking like maybe 20 percent of them have the right setups if that! I'm not saying selling fish to everyone is necessary but why not talk them into buying a bigger tank at that same moment they want an Oscar and maybe give them 5 percent off so they feel special!

I spend lots of time at my local Petsmart just browsing about, and I'm happy to hear every person that asks for a common pleco, the sales person asks how big their tank is. I bought one a few weeks ago and they asked me about my tank size. At my LFS they'll deny sales before sending fish to their death.

Sure fish die every day due to human or predator causes, but would you sell a person 100 cats who wants to house them in an apartment? There's a difference between intentionally feeding a fish to a bigger fish and buying a fish that will be stunted for months, if not years, in poor conditions.

Yea I feel like owners could atleast try to persuade customers to buy a fish fit to there tank, some do accually care about tank size in my area, but others will sell anyone anything lol

Well said.. and I've witnessed some of this customer.. "care" myself... some people simply do not care about the animals they keep. and can not always be weeded out. Sometimes you have to just shrug your shoulders and shake your head.. its the reality of things. Not all chain stores are bad... just as not all private LFS should be supported... management makes a HUGE difference in chain stores in particular ime. If the store is horrible... don't blame the associate.. blame the boss. I've worked for managers that used the "company policies" as guidelines and did put the animals wellfares first above all else. ( we had sick tanks set-up.. when they where not "authorized") And I've had managers that put the corporate polocies as "Law"... often at the expense of lives. ( sending exotics to local vets with no exotic experiance and haveing animal after animal die due to medication sensitivity, ect. When we had associates that worked closely with local clubs ect with knowledgeable people that where willing and capable of helping)

I agree and treat my pets the same. I absolutely love my pets and take good care of them. Usually they die from old age or some health problem related with old age like cancer etc.. My post was not about general care of pets, but being realistic about the world we live in. Yes to us as individuals it's a hobby and a pet. As an industry at whole, it's a joke to try to imprint our behaviors we personally choose and get upset and try to take action/revenge the perceived mistreatment by others. I know a lot of great Fish store employees do an amazing job. There are also just dumb people that are going to do dumb things that I myself wouldn't.

I'm certainly not saying it's right, but it happens and you DO have to accept that unless you want to go on a vigilante crusade against the pet industry and animal care everywhere. Not to mention if it weren't for the desire for tanks and new and pretty fish all the time, none of these fish would be alive. See a tank full of pretty guppies? Awesome! Do you know how many tens of thousands were likely culled to get that one tank full of fish that look that way? It's an industry and business and there is a lot of waste.

Again, why get upset about one fish death if they don't all bother you? "Well that one has a sticker on the tank that says its a feeder therefore it's life is less important.. it was made to die..." people are funny.. everyone draws their lines of right and wrong in different places and for different reasons and anyone who doesn't agree is "Wrong".
