Im a store manager for a chain pet store and it is very hard to find associates with good knowledge of aquatic life let alone one that will work for min wage. We are told that we are able to refuse sales if the animal is not going to be taken care of properly. For example if some one wants to put a damsel in a fish bowl. Unfortunately however if somebody wants an oscar that is 2" for there 29 gallon tank all they have to do is say that they have or will get a bigger tank. We are not allowed to tell them they are full of it even if we know they dont have or will never get the tank. They assume everyone one will want to buy there fish or that the store will buy it back when it gets too big for them. We do take fish but we do not buy them back and yes I have had people run there fish over in the parking lot to spite me for not being able to give them money for them. While the stores try to educate the best they can generally there is a couple of people at each store that have good knowledge of aquatics and when there tends to be issues is when an associate is to afraid to say they dont know the answer. At my store if everyone is trained that if they dont know to take a name and number and tell them that they will find out. In my opinion customers should take it upon theirselves to research what they are buying. Internet, library whatever but be accountable for the lives of the animals they are purchasing. The people in the store should be but one of many sources of explored info.
