Why Is It So Taboo For Someone Telling How Much They Bought A Fish For.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I understanding not wanting to be "suckered", but there is also such a thing as supply and demand. I looked at prices (shipped) online, and the $40 I paid for the red sev was about right. I got lucky I found a LFS that even had one.

If I really want something I will pay a little more, and IMO there is no shame in getting what you want, if you REALLY want it, deserve it, and can afford it.

People that are ashamed of getting "suckered" just didn't do their homework.

I purchased this beautiful 4" Blood Parrot at World Wide Aquarium in Roxborough, PA. for $50.

It was one of those un-planned purchases. I took one look at her and immediately called for the fish catcher.

$50 for a blood parrot? Dont get me wrong but I got mine for $5, down from $10 at petsmart.

it's comments like this that make people not want to share what they paid. Someone will ALWAYS say you overpaid regardless of the quality or supply and demand in that city/region

blood parrots are 25 in my area, petsmart never carries them

That's because you're okay with "grape drink" instead of "grape juice". A $5 BP was not worth the money you spent on it.

Hmm, so prices can be asked about but not discussed? If someone is getting ripped off shouldnt we let them know?

I honestly don't mention price except to other fish minded people and even that depends. I know people in real life that you can no longer discuss your fish tanks or items included without the subject being inflamed. Some people like previously said will not except the fact that some fish are worth more than 5 dollars, and that it is absurd that one would think of this. Then try asking a third party about thier fish tank in the presence of said friend and all the friend will talk about is the outrageous prices. The second issue is if you do get deals and or get fish from some other lfs, I try not to mention that as it isn't polite to mention that your getting fish cheapier elsewhere. But normally when it is genuine interest in price whether for simple understanding, or a consideration for thier own purchase I have no problem letting them know.

i personally find it impolite unless we know we're comparing apples to apples and not apples to bananas. someone can always come along and say well i got it for X bucks, you overpaid when there can be all kinds of stipulations

x2 Snide (or trollish) remarks like that are what keep everyone in the dark on prices. ;)

Congratulations; great price. The local PetSmarts outside of Philly have plenty of 2" BPs for $25.

BTW - You are coming along. Next time volunteer the location of the PetSmart so any of our local forum members can take advantage of the great price. We have a common bond here, so let's help one another out.

But see, I think its impolite to ask in the first place, and it only breeds more problems when people actually discuss the prices people paid. If people want to share their prices they have to understand that people will discuss them.
