Why won't my snake eat????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
75% of my balls don't eat in the winter most common problem in the ball world buy a book
I have mine in a climate controlled room with no windows and they still go off feed from December till march every year like clock work

Ok thanks for the help every one. I went to the Pet store and found some some that helps keep the skin moustined between shed cycles, And it says it also helps with eye lid problems, So when i got back i sprayed him with it and a little bit of water, And he is acting a little bit better. So ill keep you posted on how he is doing...

Can you post pics of your full tank? I think part of the reason he may not be eating may be from husbandry issues. What are temperatures / humidity levels on the warm side AND the cool side of the tank? What are you using to measure them? Make sure you include pics of the hides you are using as well.

You might also want to check out www.ball-pythons.net There is a lot of good information on that site as well as this one.

Well, heres something funny. Both of my temp and humidity gauges broke. I meant to get new ones but forgot... Stupid on my part. I'll snap some more pics when i get home, But i have a few of the few hides. This last pics is the most resent pic of mater, the snake in subject.

ok so that hot rock in there should really come out, they can easily burn themselves on it if it malfunctions in the slightest, also i don't see a water tub in there, you should always have freshwater in the tank, when i had mine she would always go and soak in there before each shed, also how often and how much are you feeding him/her? if its a young snake, it should only eat once a week, moved to once every 2 weeks when it is older (or smaller mice once a week if he will eat that often) i know you said that first pic was when you first got him but since then when he sheds is it all in once piece or broken up as this would suggest definite humidity issues, and if it is the eye caps like others have suggested then you should be able to easily see it as they will look cloudy (in this case def dont reccomend the duct tape method especially if snake is dry, try bathing him thoroughly first and then gently wipe wet q-tip on his eyes and they should come off)

oh and in the pic it looks like his tank is right in front of a vent? if this is true then i would suggest moving the tank somewhere else so that there arent drastiv temp swings when the vent kicks on and off GOOD LUCK

Well that event is acutally a heater. And it doesn't work anyways. The heat has only been in there for about a month, Because my room gets COLD! And when i got him from my brother they had a tiny dish in there. So i went to the LFS and got a Good sized water tub. Its a good sized granite one..... It is in there and i haven't seen him get in it. So later I will snap a few pics and post them. Oh and in that pic he's on a shelf i built on my foolr. Now he's On my dresser Away from heating objects..

Oh. And i forgot to add this, His eyes are a cloudy greenish color. But the shed aid stuff i got is bringing the golden color back in to them.

oh ok great sounds like you made some good changes, and yeah the shedding aide should help for now especially since his eyes are cloudy def sounds like eye caps got left on during his last shed, and its good product to have around for emergencies like this but as long as the humidity is high enough in his tank it shouldn't really be necessary in the future to use it regularly (also what i used to do with my girl was about once or twice a week i would bring her into the bathroom with me when i showered and let her chill somewhere in the bathroom while i showered so she could enjoy the humidity)

Heres what it looks like.

You could also try a humid hide box, tupperware with whole and some moss in it. Something else that worked for me is a watter dish with a lid on it with only one opening. The more secure they feel the more inclined they are to use it.
