It's not possible to have an isolated area that close without the possibility of hybridization. Birds, turtles, snakes, etc can all carry eggs to different locations quite easily. All of the labridens are in extreme danger of getting bred out of existance and any fish caught in those areas could be a hybrid and should be properly identified by an expert.

I'm not in anyway implying that Don's are hybrids, so don't take the above statement the wrong way. Just saying that I don't believe in magical secret locations.

Very good post.

In the recent months there are two "magical locations" that have produced a large number of rare, marketable, and expensive species. One was an abandoned fish farm with beani, the other a secret isolated pond with pure labridens. It should be expected that such stories produce a lot of questions. I'm not saying they aren't true, but it's a stretch to get a knowledgeable aquarist to take them at face value without some additional explanation.

Sorry for the hijack, OP. Perhaps another thread with some input from suppliers, etc. would be more appropriate. Since you're working with Don, maybe you could get some background for us on the labs. Wasn't it Davis or Rapps with the beani? I can't remember.

Chris - this is Jon (not Dan Ye)... she only wants to post photos in the Media Lounge, not start (or continue) any controversy. We hope you all agree.

Regarding 'background' - I myself would NEVER give away my secret trout-fishing spots! DNA and science are key to ending any hybrid conjecture. Thank you.

Sorry for the derail Jon and Dan Ye:). Pictures of rare fish like this often lead to discusion and that is a good thing as long as it is tastefull and educational.

Good luck with your breeding attemps. Any new blood into the gene pool of these fish is a great thing!!
