Yes, it's become a mess.

For the record here's the first paragraph of the thread:

"The wild fish craze of late is interesting. Good to see some new blood in the hobby, but I am concerned that some people are getting "taken" along the way. There are certainly some honest vendors out there (many of which are represented here on MFK), but there are also some unscrupulous sellers too!"

Anyone who takes offense at that must have an axe to grind or a guilty conscience.

Please give us your scientific credentials that qualify you to make such a statement

his answer was pretty clear about the vendors.

and why do you care? Arent you getting ready to tell us that you fly your personal jet to Nicaragua and free dive into Lake Xilo and hand catch all your cichlids, all before we even get out of bed to go to work?

thats it, dont bother defending the fact that he said you couldnt get convicts to mate, bought paired fish and never paired your own and all of the sudden you are the expert...yea, dont bother acknowledging those facts...just change the subject and pretend it didnt happen...lol

THE ECONOMICS OF THE SITUATION IS WHAT PUZZLES ME. If you've ever shipped large specimens anywhere in the US, much less internationally, you already know how expensive that is. Wild fish certainly had to endure quite a bit of shipping. Add to that the cost of collection, travel, etc. and it can really mount up. So, when I see a large wild fish offered for a couple of hundred dollars I can understand the costs involved, and the sales price seems appropriate. Certainly a group of wild fry or juvies can be shipped more cheaply, and in the case of a personal collecting trip one could actually bring small specimens back inexpensively (even as carry-on luggage!).......but then you've got the prices of the flight and other travel costs to factor in!

It seems there are lots of LARGE wild fish being offered in the hobby right now. I know one vendor who imports directly from operators in CA and SA and pays (and ultimately charges) top dollar for large specimens. Another apparently has operations in CA that collect and raise fish there before shipping them to the US. I'm not sure just how that works though as it would seem the only economically viable way to do that would be to ship the fish as youngsters, yet that vendor offers many large animals for sale rather inexpensively.

I guess my point is the numbers don't always seem to add up. I don't see how one could make a living incurring very high costs per animal in the collection, shipping, and raising process only to turn around and sell them rather inexpensively. The profit margin, if there is any, would have to be very tight. Add to that THIRD PARTY VENDORS and the feasibility comes even more into question.

I hope not to create some sort of controversial back and forth with this discussion, so if you can't be civil please don't contribute to the thread. Also, I hope this doesn't degenerate into a "wild fish are better" discussion. I'm really focussing on the economics of importing wilds.
ira thanks for the hookup the godmanni and catemaco are doing great.

The wild dempseys started the first thread about illegal imports, F0 bocourti pics added to the sniping about availability of large rare fish and theses pics of these F0 Godmani and P sp Catemaco posted yested makes one wonder about the economice of wild fish. I guess vendors need to charge extreme prices to prove the fish are wild well I guess the game has changed.

just as I figured, NO experience with anything other than what your mentor teaches you. WOW, you can sex a 3 inch Dovii? you mean the most popular fish on MFK for 2009 that has more threads on sexing than any other fish in the history of MFK? IMPRESSIVE!!

Yea, and everything but 1st generation is colorless huh, just like Greenterras Festae you said was the best youd ever seen right? I could post you 8 yrs worth of pics and you wouldnt be able to tell what was wild, F1, F2, F3 etc...and probably male or female. While Id love to rub the fact that you really dont know much of anything in your face, the simple fact is theres nothing wrong with NOT KNOWING EVERYTHING...Its how we learn things. The problem lies within someone who acts like they know it all, when they actually know less than someone who can admit they dont.

Give it a rest kid...and Give Ira a break. Quit associating yourself with him.

Ira, thanks for showing respect to me and the forum rules with your recent post (sarcastic smiley to follow).

Also, you are apparently a mind reader and can linearly trace my thought patterns from one thread to the next. Could you please help me find my keys?

It's nice to read the original post in this thread as it clearly is an innocent one. Thanks for posting it.

Go ahead and start your own thread. Feel free to fill it with links to MY antagonistic posts. It'll be a quick read. You may want to leave out any complimentary comments I made regarding your fish for sale. That'd just confuse people.

...or just go ahead on hijacking with abandon.

The reason he quoted you is the same reason I am. Your still provoking them and ignorant of what has already been said. You keep bringing the thread back off topic. How hard is it to have some self control?

EDIT: Capefeartarheel you and mob have both lost my respect and have been added to my ignore list.

My take is it's tough to tell a liar on face value sometimes, so you have to use your head.

For instance, if someone you didn't know offered to sell you a "two foot long wild male dovii sp 'Rio Gullible'" for $20 that'd cause some alarms to go off.

That's why I use my LFS as an example. They are selling incredibly rare fish at large sizes for peanuts (that is, until they kill them with neglect!). How can they make a business out of that?
