Also, the tank is smelling a bit fishy, is this normal? I dont think I got an answer as to how often and how much do I feed them?

There are 16 fry to be exact, in a 20 or 30 gallon long, im not sure what it is.
Then I moved all the guppies into the 10 gallon tank, I dont want them swimming around the fry not getting eaten.

honestly bradda if you dont know much about aquariums.. you should prob invest some cash in a good book.. if interested i will recommend one.

to lower nitrates you need to do water changes often.. such as once a every week. to get you nitrates lower then they are now.. i would normally say to do a few small water changes this week. something like every other day but since its only a 20 gallon and your dealing with baby cichla you are looking at a big change with temp fluctuation, change in ph and shock. .. you can try doing a 30 percent water change, and adding PRIME which is made by seachem.. waiting 3 days or so and possibly doing another water change but on the line of maybe a 15 or even a 10 percent.. make sure you vacuum that gravel good and take out anything that is dead and possibly decaying in your tank such as dead feeders and left over foods. for the second water change you may want to add bio spira which is a live biological bacteria that keeps your tank from going thru a mini cycle.

to lower ph you may want to start off with just adding black water at first..( dose it to your tank and add it to your water when you do water changes) after you get your water quality problem straightened out. i recommend adding a piece of clean bogwood. ebay has some nice pieces sometimes.

your tank should not smell fishie. it probly from rotting food. look around the tank. take it out. this is making your nitrates high and prob your ammonia too.

im not big into feed them till they explode like alot of others on the forum. i take the more natural and healthy route. when they are small they do need alot of food. feed them at least 1 meal a day. i recommend 2 small meals a day. you keep calling them fry.. personally what do you consider fry bc i consider fry to be about a half inch and no bigger. there is no possible way they are going to eat guppies.. do you any pictures? if not can you take some. feed them enough but not to much. i guess this is were you judgement comes in :naughty:. how big are they btw?

now for my 2 cents. you live in florida and have access to these fish. release these before you kill them. you honeslty dont have enough knowledge about water chem and what keeping a real aquarium consist off. buy a book. drain your tank, set it back up the right way, let it cycle properly for a month and read about how to keep cichla from this site. then possibly try them again. no offense but you really dont know anything about keeping a real aquarium and i dont mean to knock you. i am more then happy to help but i think that you keeping cichla in your tank right now from what i understand the conditions are most likely going to be a tragedy. :WHOA: ;)

I agree with you Boosten but if I release them I fear they will be eaten. No they arent fry I guess, they are 2.5 inches or so. I will take a water sample to the LFS, last time I was there I heard some people asking for it to be checked. Ill do the same and ask them what supplies I need to make it possible along with what you told me.

You absolutely right though, I jumped into this completely wrong, unknowing, and irresponsibly. Im trying to make things right by correcting it and making the pbass healthy. I dont have room to keep them, so believe me, once they are getting bigger I will let them go. I love to fish and watch pbass, I want FL water to be packed with them, last thing I want is for any to die.

better to die by the hand of nature than by poisoned in a tank...

if you feel like you can care for them (house them comfortably) and really want to, then get your research in and raise some good fish.

if you just feel like you are saving them from being eaten then set them free (probably against your state DNR laws though)

ok well honestly then you should probly release them now because if you grow them a bit and then release them the chances are they are not going to survive at all. you have better chances of them not getting eaten at 2.5 inch... i pretty sure there mom dis owns them after and inch or so. they will find natural foods to forage on since they barely ate anything in your tank and do not depend on humans for food yet.. pl;us the natural good water quality will perk them back up.

well lfs test water but most dont know whatthere doing.. including the amazing animal kindom near me :WHOA: but if you insist.. nitrates need to be 5ppm or under ammonia needs to be 0. ph should be 6.8 or lower but dont use ph down.. thats what they are going to give you. black water or cttappa leaves.. then further down the road bogwood. if you use bogwood now your tanks ammonia may spike. temp needs to be 85- 87... but i aim for more on the terms of 87

good luck but honestly i dont know why your going to go through the trouble to kill them further down the road releasing them and you dont know how to ship

*sigh*, ill just release them...

Why not use ph down, you insist on black water or /catappa leaves, reason?

softens the water and lowers ph...
