Will he survive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok. Now I'm really mad! He was just starting to get better and then I get a text from my dad and he jumped out again! There are no holes remotely close to thickness of this guy and the tank is completely covered. I've had this guy for over a year now and not once did it try to get out. How come all of a sudden it has this urge to escape from the tank.

is he ok? try and put rock or something to weigh the top of the tank down so he doesn't push anything up

You can never be too careful with bichirs. We have all learnt it the hard way. Best is to secure every unthinkable nook and holes possible.

How is he faring now? Hope he is ok.

As they get bigger they get stronger. Just covering isn't enough. You have to weigh it down. I found some cool fish statues that i put on top of my glass good luck. Is their other fish in the tank that might be biting its tail or spooking it?

Thanks guys. He's doing fine. Thankfully my dad was in the kitchen when he got out. He didn't see where he got out, he just heard it flopping on the ground so he picked him up and put him back in. I just put a bunch of text books on top of the lid so hopefully that'll hold.

There is a lapredei in with him but that guy is half his size and I'm more worried about the endli pickin on him rather than the other way around. They get along so far so I don't think he's the one causing my endli to suddenly want to escape all the time.

i hope the books gives a good holding on the top glass. if he still managed to pop out of the tank, well, you've gotta monster strong monster fish in there!
good luck and keep us updated.

Half gallon milk jugs with water are good weights for tank tops...they cant really make too much of a mess if u knock them off. Old larger plastic fish food containers filled with water work well also or tupperware. I use 4 full gallon milk jugs for my aros. The hole with lid is only 18"x5" but better safe than sorry. Ur fish may be just freaking out to gulp air with all the stress and "rocketing" to the top pushing the lid and out. I keep these "water filled" weights on all my lids just in case.

So here's an update for you guys. Besides his recent escape, again :( he's doing extremely well! You can see that the redness on his body is pretty much completely gone. The only evidence is that his head is still kinda pale. Hopefully, it'll color up again. I did notice that the extensions from his nostrils are gone now. Do you guys know if those will grow back?
I also siphoned out majority of the sand. I decided to keep some of it in there and I will be adding in black sand so hopefully his colors will start popping out more.

Looks like nothing had happened! Good as new!
