Oh, also this lady tells me "I hate cichlids, if your so mean why dont you meet my friend the alligator in the back!" Crazy lady!

lol! I've been to that store! There really is an alligator in the store, by the goldfish. Thing's got to be atleast four feet long and it's in a 125! Oh well, it'll grow to the size of the tank anyway...

I can understand what all of you are saying about "know it all" customers, but then I run in to "know it all" employees that were just as dumb.....

Me- I'd like to purchase a couple koi for my pond
Sales clerk- I can't sell koi to you if you going to put them in your pond, nor will we garantee them (but I guess it was ok for him to sell them to me for my 20 gallon fish tank:eek:)

Me- I'd like to purchase 4 of these Kubota Botia loaches and I can't find the tag, how much are they?
Sales clerk- Those are yo-yo loaches and they're $4.99, see heres the tag.
Me- No sir, those are kubota botia, look it up.
Sales clerk- Lady do you want these loaches or not?
Well, I bought all four of them for $4.99 each, (and by the way they are Kubota Botia, I'd looked them up before buying them and after I got home just to double check) A week later, and I guess a new shipment they are now correctly marked (at least with the name) and are now $19.95:screwy:

I bought a pair of irridescent sharks recently and the guy working at the lps says"you do realize this fish will get to around 10" and needs to live in a 55 gal?" Me:"Actually they can reach over 40" in the wild and there is some debate over how large they can get in a home aquarium, and these will eventually be housed in my 1100 gal tropical pond, until my 5,000 gal tropical pond is completed." LFS guy:"You're thinking of something else, and you can't house these in a pond because it will get too cold, and they won't be able to find food in such a large environment" I look puzzled at the guy "So do you think they will be fine with My RTC, TSN, and Jau Once they are full grown?", Guy"You're just making things up, there are no such fish as those", I pull out my camera phone, show him a pic of me handfeeding my 3' Tsn x Rtc Hybrid. Guy:"Hey I'm sorry I've only been working here for a week, and needed a little extra cash I'm quiting in a month when I get a better job", Me"Do everyone a favor and call my Cell #(insert number) if anyone asks about any type of catfish sold in this store, and suggest they bring me their fish if they are keeping them in a 55 gal.

I just can't stand the LFS around here. Some of the people are nice and at least the owners know that I am not BSing when I say I know my stuff when it comes to catfish, but some of the employees are beyond me. At least I got one local fish store to do away with the size tags that are incorrect and put out a fish atlas for people to browse through.

On a brighter note someone actually brought me a 13.5" Jag they had in their 30 gal for 4 years. He seemed pretty confused in the 1100 gal that he could actually swim in 3-D.

i dont work at a pet store (yet)
but this one time i was in my lfs and and there were these two ladies in the fih room looking at this big african cichlid display and one of the two sees this pure dark blue fish and goes "you ee that fish, its a jack dempsey, they get big and meen. you can keep them in a 29 gallon tank. i used to have one in my 55 gallon tank with 2 oscars and an "algea eater". I went up to her and firt told her that it wasnt a jack dempsey but an african cichlid and that you cant keep it in a 29 gallon. i also told her that it was not a good idea to keep 2 oscars in 55 gallon with a jd and an "algea eater"

she just looks at me with aww and just said "umm ok"
she wa probably thinking what does a 13 year old no about fish:irked:

well this wasn't a dumb customer...but..

On the way up to ocean blue, i stopped in at petland to just look around. They had a sign saying "COME SEE BRUTUS THE GIANT FISH!"

Brutus was a 6'' oscar.
i was like
....my fish would eat that.
The lady was like : no no. Oscars are to agressive to get eaten, and no freshwater fish gets big enough to eat him anyway.
Ha ha, 6" is like one of my smallest fish.

I was WORKING AT MY LFS a while ago and this guy came in who had just setup a small pond and wanted to buy 12 8" Shubunkins and was expecting a 50%!!!! discount off of them. I said how big is your pond? He said about 2x2 and can i have that koi (points to one at £100 for £25???? He didn't get any thing in the end after explaining to him that pond isn't big enough for much.

Sooo sad soo sad... Like when I went to one of my favorite fish stores and I was waiting to just buy some electric yellows. Some dumb broad with her dumb kid was going to buy a betta. She says and I quote :
Her:"can I have a bag for this betta."
employee: "Yea thats fine hang on one sec"
her:" you know, you guys shouldnt put holes in the tops of these cups. my son could drop this thing on the way to the parking lot and it will die"
employee: "umm because if we didnt have holes in it the fish would die"
her: "you guys should reconsider how you sell these."

she then proceeded to have her kid hold the poor betta in a bag which im sure he dropped or shook on the way to the car. why let your kid even hold a fish if your that concerned? or should he even have one if he cant even hold a cup upright? i no joke wanted to walk up steal the betta, gently set it down and slap her dumb ***. 50 bucks says she keep the betta in the same water and her kid and her wont feed that poor thing. If i owned my own store i would refuse people left and right unless i knew they knew what they were talking about. and give them a test to see how much they know before they buy certain fish grrrrrrrr PEOPLE ARE SO DUMB SOMETIMES!

Problem is you can't refuse all the dumb@sses or you would never sell anything. You just have to try and do your best to educated people. You hope that they will take the knowledge that you bestow upon them and make the best decisions, but some people just have to learn the hard way. Not everyone will come to sites like this and make an informed decision. They will talk to their friends, and probably some of the more unexpirienced employees that are just learning themselves. Live and let live I guess, even though it hurts.

A guy brought in a Panther Grouper at 12". He bought it a few months back. We pay 1/3 of what we sell them for. He bought it for $60, and thought he should get more than $20 because it was BIGGER. He was lucky he was even allowed to trade it in, we'll be lucky to sell that fish. In my opinion, we shouldn't be selling them, and people shouldn't be buying them. -1 all around.
