Flower1982 just reminded me of a story that made me laugh so hard i cried, after the customer left.

So this lady gets a few platys her first week, she has a 30g. Next week she gets some more and a few cories, then next time a few tetras and an algae eater, then finally some dwarf gouramis. All of this over a 2 month period. Then we redid our fish tags and they now say " Aquarium Salt Recommended!" So this lady gets the salt and is using for about 2 weeks when she starts to bring dead fish in. The way she was bringing these fish i thought she was just forgetting to take them in the house when she got home:ROFL: . So she brings in a sample of water, i test it, and here ammonia is really high, i was like you need to do a 25-50% water change immediately and start doing a 25% every 3-4 days to get your ammonia down. She says okay, she does that for 2 weeks, i test it again, still ammonia off the chart. She gets upset because she has been doing the water changes like shes supposed to. Then she comes in one day and says, i found the problem the STARFISH had died and they final found it under an ornament when they decided to just do a 100% water change!!! i was like a STARFISH that is a marine, aka SALTWATER fish. she goes they all are, they all require aquarium salt!!!   . I was at a loss for words, apparently she was at Petco and bought a chocolate starfish, because her algae eater wasnt eating algae, a STARFISH!!!:screwy: They told her it would clean her SALTWATER tank up real quick, they love algae.

That is i think my all time favorite.

Yep, i know what you mean. lotta idiots out there. The worst are the ones who think they know what there talkin about but are ABSOLUTLEY WRONG!!! "I am an expert on Discus and they are brackish water fish, they swim up a river in china to spawn and then swim back to the sea. If you want to breed them lower your water temp to 60f". The next worse are the people who complain that all their fish died after they bought fish from our store and demand to be refunded. They say that our fish must be sick, only to find out that they have 2 oscars, 7 neon tetra, 6 guppys, an arowana, a lwanda peacock and 4 goldfish in their 10 gal tank with an underpowered air pump as the only method of aeration (they thought it was a filter). Oh, and they just set up the tank the day before. People, RESEARCH!!!!

p.s. all actual events and not potrayed by actors:)

Oh man, in almost 10 years of working in a LFS I've heard lots of these or stories close to them.
One of my favs is the lady who called and told me she was having trouble getting her background to stick to her tank...and the fish keep getting stuck behind it, how do I keep my fish out from behind it? Was there anything other then scotch tape, which didnt seem to be working underwater, that she could use to hold her paper background on so it didnt keep floating to the top?
I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing at her while I explained to her that she needed to put the backgound on the outside of the tank and it would solve both of her problems. She was actually a lil miffed that the store she had bought this from had not explained to her that she needed to do this and that she would be calling me for advise from now on..kind of a scary thought .

Another winner was the guy who was moving and asked if we would take his fish in for him. Ok, we said bring them on in. He said he had some nice stuff an we were willing to give him a lil $$ since the usual fish credit would not work for him.
This brain surgeon comes in with a trash can, not a clean trash can, but a trash can he had dumped upside down to get the trash out of it and poured his fish into . I mean filthy grey water with cig butts etc floating in it along with the majority of the now dead or dying fish fish.... they had croaked on the way over. I was speechless. I told this asshat that there was no way he was getting any $$ for this mess, I'd take the survivors off his hands and try to save them and what was he thinking anyhow, using a dirty trash can??? He gets mad, says there is nothing wrong with the dirty water for a short trip and says he'll throw then in the trash first and storms out.... then comes right back in and slams down the can and says we can have the #%%&&( things and hes never coming back. Ummmm didnt you say you were moving out of state anyhow???

One thing is for sure there is never a dull day working withthe general public.

I never worked at a pet store but this is not an exclusive problem to your industry......
I work for a home builder in Az and most of these same people live in houses.

One guy had a chip in his stem wall so I sent a concrete guy to patch it. An hour goes by and the guy comes to my office in an uproar complaing about termites in his house. I calm the guy down and get to the bottom of it. It turns out the patch guy told him it must have been concrete termites that made the hole.... I tell the guy There is no such thing as a termite that eats concrete... The next day he brings me articles he found on the internet about this alusive bug that bores into concrete... I glanced through it and told him we don't live in the tropics this is a dessert....
Resurch is great if you don't have the answer before you ask the question.
