Honestly kjfan, if you want the BGK, get it.

I bought mine at 2" two years ago. He is now a solid 8" and some change, and happy and healthy in my 55g with my bichirs.

Speaking from experience, if you give him a place to call home in the tank (they love to hide inbetween and under things), a 55g will be fine for a long time.
