I just set up a 75 gal tank. I was working on a big plywood tank but can’t work on it at the moment. Anyways I was looking into stocking my tank with a solo Rainbow Wolf or Gold Wolf fish. Would either be good for life in the 75? Also, I’m open to other cool suggestions for a solo tank.

I’ve had both as well as a mala. I’d say a 75 is a little small for the gold since it was so active. I think a rainbow or mala would be ok. Malas get pretty big but don’t hardly move.

Thanks for the help! Malas are illegal here in CA unfortunately even though I think they look better. I like the Rainbow’s colors better honestly so I’m glad to hear that they’ll be okay

Also, the tank is still being setup and cycled so I’m in no hurry. I also like Snakehead Gudgeons and Dragon Puffers. Honestly I like oddballs so if you have any other recommendations, please let me know. Really liking the Rainbow Wolves though.

I missed where you said you’re working on a big plywood tank. I say get the gold if that big tank is a definite. Golds are very active and interactive. The red wolf, dragon puffer and most other wolf fish are like having a pet rock. I heard black wolf fish are active, but probably also illegal in CA. I had a gold wolf with , hujeta, odoe pike, chalceus and red tailed barracuda. They were all 6-8” and I only had that combo for a few months, but it seemed to work. One of my favorites oddballs isn’t considered an oddball by most but it’s rhampochromis haps. They look just like barracuda including the big teeth. I had a pair of rhampochromis with some bichirs and that was a really cool tank
Here’s a vid of the gold wolf with the others

I am working on a large plywood aquarium with a 7’ x 3’ x 3’ footprint and black wolves are probably near the top of the list to keep in it. They remind me of a Ceolacanth which I love. But with a bunch of life events getting in the way of my plywood tank build, I won’t get one until the tank is 100% complete. I feel like it’s the responsible thing to do. My understanding is that only malas are illegal and not black wolves or other wolf species, though I can always double check. I also don’t mind if they aren’t active. My favorite aquarium fish in the past before I left the hobby was the Irwini catfish, for example.

I thought all hoplias wolves were banned in CA, but I’m not positive.
Haha I love irwini as well. I had a dragon puffer for a while too (I recently moved to a new state and sold all my fish and just started over again) and I loved it. It was a pet rock that turned psychotic at feeding time
