WORD TO THE WISE

Gotta reel it back maybe a dozen posts. When you get to a couple of them that are almost incomprehensible; you've found a yeller.

gotta tone it down for people of few words those days so basically need permits to even ship plants let alone snails to cross the state lines 🥱 thats my first google hit and it has codes cited in there like I explained about the wood thing earlier

Truth be told I find the OP's initial remarks about never having rec'd an unwanted pest in 38 years of fish keeping to be laughably preposterous and castigating a plant seller for having snails among their shipment is uncalled for. I also am not a huge fan of subjective references in this or similar contexts but I do think rules exist for a reason and if snails aren't supposed to be shipped anywhere then there are a ton of vendors that appear to be intentionally thumbing their noses at issues that merit scrutiny.

Ya he’s full of 💩, especially if he kept salt. Even if you FW dip your LR, you’re gonna get some hitchhiker’s at some point

Agreed. I built a little electrocuter on a stick for the marine guys at a LFS years ago. They were killing bristle worms with that stick last I saw of it. I can't imagine going a year w/out noticing a virus, bacteria, fungus, parasite or predator much less a snail. I'll be the first to say that I find snails to be disgusting creatures and loath them in my tanks but would I ever say that their existence in my tank had been someone else's fault?

Let me think about that.

No.

Gross. Just say no.

I do t think pest snails are as harmless as some people are portraying them to be, at the same time I don’t think blaming A vendor is reasonable as no one wants to pass along pest snails knowingly.

last Year my 135g tank crashed bc I had so many ramshorns in my my filters, they were growing and getting stuck in the sponge filter holes unable to escape they would die in the sponge causing what I assume was a slow increase in an ammonia spike in my tank which eventually caused a-cycle crash. No fun to lose 20+fish. So I understand not wanting to introduce them in a “clean” system.

may the same time the vendor probably does dip his plants upon arrival and prior to departure to new homes….has anyone even asked him what his procedure is? Clearly he knows what he is doing isn’t working and some are getting through to customers (he offers the warning and tips for treatment on his website). He should t be faulted for it.

if anyone in either freshwater or salt water added anything new to their aquariums without QT then that’s on the aquarists for the consequences. Don’t want snails, dip and QT all plants prior to adding them to your system. Re dip as necessary, keep plants in water with copper during QT. Heck even before adding new fish to your system you should be dipping them in clean water (from your tank in a container) as live bearing snails can be carried on the water droplets attached to the fish.

This is probably about as acceptable as dressing for church and deciding to go commando...but I have snails in every tank I operate...because I intentionally introduce them. I would never want a tank without snails (or algae, incidentally). I've gone out of my way to introduce MTS, Ramshorns, Pond Snails...even a large species of native that is fairly prolific in my outdoor pond and which I haven't bothered to try identifying.

LIke almost anything else, they are perfectly fine...in moderation. Let them get out of control, through lack of culling, overfeeding, etc. and of course they can be a problem...just like algae. I am particularly fond of substrate-aerating MTS; no weird little egg masses stuck in embarrassing places, thanks to being livebearing. :)

And one of the things I miss most about marine tanks is that wonderful and fascinating variety of amazing little critters that come in on live rock.

I GUess I juSt dOn't UnDErstanD the ProblEm heRe...
