Working dog or show standard?

The hovawarts I know are bigger and chunkier than most Pyrenees I've seen, though..m

I've never seen one except Google images, but to me they look a bit like a Golden Retriever. It may be that the German strains are a lot bigger, but this is what the internet says about the size of Hovawarts versus Pyrenees.

Hovawart:
Height: 23 - 28 inches (58 - 70 cm)
Weight: 55 - 90 pounds (25 - 51 kg)

Pyrenees:
Height: Males 27 - 32 inches (69 - 81 cm) Females 25 - 29 inches (63 - 74 cm) are the average heights, but some Pyrenees are as tall as 40 inches (1 meter)
Weight: Males from 100 pounds (45 kg) Females from 85 pounds (38 kg)

I have the same idea as Dan. Big Golden Retrievers is an apt description.

.......... dobie is watch dog and probably would be aggressive if needed to be......
Liz, if your dobie is anything like the female I had, there's no "probably" about it :-)
IMO, the epitome of a good minded home dog is that they absolutely know how to differentiate between normal human activities (even strangers) and the real need for them to even threaten, much less act. they have judgement, use self restraint, threaten if needed, and attack when it's needed- yet no cowardice.
I can count on one hand the times my girl threatened, & she discerned a persons' character, not only their actions. was different when standing up to a person making innocent "walk-in" (brother said "go on inside & use bathroom" to his stranger friend, without telling me first) and someone with bad intent. I only saw her snarl, growl & glaring like an 'evil' eyed dobie with her hackles up quietly ONCE, and the person was wicked. my friend was there & said she took my dogs' testimony against that person more serious than she had any dog in her life.
My dobie was an absolute love bug.
:-)

was a long time ago. and my husband still reminisces about how stealthily she could step upon the foot of our bed, one foot at a time & never wake us. then he'd start freaking out because he couldn't move his legs at all, with her laying against them. LOL. she was hilarious.

Very well put. This the apt description of a family dog.

my dobie is very much the same... they are

she is so loveable........ needs your attention but not needy...will quard you with their life..talk to you in long sounds when they want something... sleep and hang out with you if you are sick.......... she puts her big rubber bone on the side of my pillow so i will share it with her.. i open my eyes to this big red thing in my face..lol..... will not wake you abruptly but instead stares at your face until you feel her power... you can take a raw bone away from her at any time.. she is always willing to share it with me... a superior wonderful breed... so unbelieveably smart.. knows all the cunning ways to get the collie up.. just looking at him with her eyes.. never mean.. but very dominate... she is the dobes..... yes once you have one you never for get them... this is my 4th dobie..

the thing is, here in USA, you can't have the liability of a dog who will just grab ahold of any stranger who makes a mistaken step on your property. lawsuit happy people everywhere, looking for a free ride.
@Liz, I'm telling you, that time my dog started creeping toward the one person of bad character, her demeanor sent chills up MY spine. it was the only time I had to physically pull her back and then keep ahold of her collar too. and she kept "the look" toward that individual in the room.
the person had not yet done any bad act that we saw, but did later. it wasn't even violence.
Gotta love wise dogs!
