Working dog or show standard?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feel that way about the bull and terriers. Especially the Amstaff vs apbt. AKC closed there books in the 70's I think. So a lot of dogs in the UKC were dual registered. Its all about elitism and profit. Nobody cares about the principles anymore. :banghead:

This is a working line of the "Neopolitan Mastiff" (Mastino Nnapulitano) known locally as the "Cane da Presa Meridionale" the modern Neo. has been breed with exagerated fetures where Cane da Presa Meridionale retains the features and drive to preform as originally intended. This dog is slightly smaller the features are less exagerated wich allows it better work as intended.

wow those r some nice looking beasts forsure

You have killed me with that Meridionale, Tom....has a lot of Corso in it, as well as Presa Canario.

Origins are all the same.

In any case, i cannot make myself, against my grain, not to absolutely love, modern Neos. ( and guard they do, that i can vouch for. :) )ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1365789114.156717.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1365789146.631834.jpg

Miguel the modern Neo. is nothing to fool with and I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of one guarding its home. I was just making the point of how the two standards for the same breed can differ greatly. The Meridionale would stand no chance in the show ring if judged against the "breed standard" but there is no doubting its functionality.

Exactly!

...........However some breeds that gain popularity through dog shows as opposed to working trials are bred to be living statues and all but loose there working ability by being bred to and idealized “standard” rather than their ability to preform their original function. Some hunting breeds as an example look completely different if you compare a working dog next to a show dog. It has always been my contention that a dog must be able to at least show a willingness to perform its original function (pass a working trial) before it is allowed to be shown on the bench. Any opinions on this?
A working breeds' "acceptance" by the AKC is the quickest demise of the mental traits of original purpose... and many physical assets for that performance, as well.
Re: herding breeds, conformation showing & resultant loss of working abilities has led breeders to maintain separate registries for working lines which require task performance.
IMO, there is a difference between complex performance and merely "showing a willingness". You can end up with dogs willing to chase, or signal aggression but could not put livestock anywhere, but scattered to the 4 corners of distant hills. they have no inclination to bring the cows or sheep home. a menace to livestock & often, running children.
