Worried about bichir aggression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've seen it go both ways. :( I hope it passes or doesn't cause problems with your little guy. Can you remove the rest of the gravel? I feel like this happens more with captive bred fish.

I also agree with twentyleagues twentyleagues that it looks like you have two senegals - one albino, one regular. Not a palmas.

I'm not an expert on water changes, but doing 1 gallon 3x/day seems like it would possibly be stressful for the fish. A single 3 gallon WC might cause less stress. Just a thought.

Also not sure if you should hold water changes if you dose espom? Maybe kno4te kno4te can speak to that?

Good luck! We all know how these bichirs can worm their way into your heart.
2 days is good. Just enough to get a response.

Yeah I'm definitely planning to remove the gravel, I just wasn't sure if I should do it right away or give it some time to prevent further stress. As for the WC, you're probably right, I'll adjust my routine

I'm not sure re: stress and changing substrate right now. Might be best to wait it out?

I hope he passes it. Grab a pic if you can! I know it's hard with these little ones.

You can't really see how big the lump is from the angle I took these from.. but you can see the fin damage in the first pic and a little bit of the lump in the second 2

aggression sucks. My little albino also had his pec fin torn off to the little knubb. I was super concerned, BUT It grew back even longer than it was before! I'm sure there's pics on here somewhere of it and can post them to share . Listen to dr. kno4te kno4te 's recommendation of clean water and salt and you should be good to go. Agree with magpie magpie about doing a larger water change instead of one every day, for this issue. Would also advise checking the water parameters periodically to make sure all your levels are good.

Hope the albino passes the gravel soon. Keep us posted with his/her updates. Good luck! We are rooting for you!

Yeah I've been keeping really diligent about water changes, will test when I get home to have exact parameters though. I feel like 90% of the time people have questions about sick/dying fish, they could save everyone some time and do a water change FIRST; It's like calling tech support for your phone without trying to turn it off and on again!

Update on the albino: when I left this morning it looked like the lump had traveled down to his uh.. butt, and it seemed like he was trying to pass it. After observing my tank a couple more days, I realized a large dwarf snail that had hitch-hiked in on my plants had mysteriously disappeared... Now I'm starting to wonder if it was the snail he ate and not the gravel.

It would be more efficient to do larger water changes once or twice a week vs a couple of gallons a day. Depending on bio load i'd advocate for fin level. Polys and most fish being stressed during wc's are a myth. Take notice of how they love to swim in the fresh water coming from your tap.

Nitrates creep up all week long amd taking a few gallons out a day does not account for this. Think of it as slightly diluting dirty water then the next day removing a little of that clean water along with some dirty water.

Bloody hell senegal birchirs at 2" are $200 adults go for $500 usually. "Australia" the lucky country my ass!
