I have started using a seperate controler with a titanium heating element... they cost 70 for the pair but it is well worth it for peace of mind.
I have luck. I can tell if the heater is good or not looking at it. You know when you see those dodgy heaters that have a bad design and look ugly? Those have been the ones that my LFS have told that have failed the most. Weird eh?
they may look pretty but a temp rise of 15* in a few hours isn't fun at all 
all my heaters were glass and hang on the top.the water level does drop a good bit in my main tank but i dont worry about my heater pooping

How about the Rena ones that integrate into the piggyback filter or in the canister. Anybody like em?

i use penn plax 300 watt heater. its glass, never had a problem temperature is dead on in my 75.i like the way the mouts are positionable along the heater as well
