You asked for opinions and he gave you his, I don't think you should insult him for giving you what you asked for :screwy:... though I do agree with your point of view on the article.

That post should be REQUIRED READING prior to anyone getting posting privileges!

Everyone sure is polite as long as everyone agrees with them!

Great post!

im just sayin everyones got to remember that we paid for that fire truck and the gas that it runs on (1MPG). and we pay there salarys so they may buy there own cars.

i think the reporters needed a story and picking on life saving workers was the wrong thing. but the tabs on us when there using equipment improperly.

so 911 workers should also refuse to go to calls made by alarm system companies? think hard about that one and it will make total sense

if not during our shift when do u want us to get food? We cant do it before our shift because many times we dont know how many people we get in our station. And we gave up over 50% of our raise this year because of our economic situation. Did u do that?

Speaking from years of experience the topic of apparatus use is always a hot topic. Most of the time it is a product of the current relationship between management and employees. When you see more apparatus out on non-emergency details, to include eating, it is safe to assume that the current relationship is one of mutual respect. Usually contract negotiations (for states with collective bargaining) have gone well, the chief is happy and the employees (Firemen) are responsible.

There does come a time when it is fiscally responsible for the firemen to look at the bigger picture and rethink our excursions into the public using apparatus. We should always consider own pride and our ownership in the department and city we serve. Often a large idling diesel is just that no matter how glamorous our job may seem. A big idling diesel can be a tough pill to swallow.

We have overcome some of this by parking in out of the way, out of sight areas such as alleys and back lots. We also make it a practice to idle as little as possible. In the winter it is a different story, but for the non-winter months we try not to idle. Most of the time we tie in training with our "food-excursions". We stay current on the make-up and layout of structures in our city and time these drills to conclude on or near lunch. If we happen to be a block or so from a nearby restaurant, we happily walk.

Respectfully,
FireMedic.

is the firehouse at the center of the district? i think i'm more worried it may take longer to respond then the tax money.

trust me, u dont have to worry about responce times. :naughty: lol. All joking aside, no firehouse is in the center of thier first due. But there is alot of work figureing out where the stations go for maximum effectiveness. and if other station feel that they can be closer to the call(cause they are on the street from another call, or  coming from grocerys) they will say we are closer and take it.:headbang2

Oh and thanks for chiming in Firemedic. I was hoping u would :)

people have such useless lives like reporters who report about that.... i bet if his car was on fire in that parking lot he would of prayed that the firemen were in the stop and shop eating lunch then being 5 or more minutes away........

We do this all the time and I see nothing wrong with this. The last time I went grocery shopping with my crew we had a medical call and we dropped our basket, left the grocery cart, and went to the emergency. When we went back to get our stuff, the store employees were nice enough to put our grocery's by the cash register before we came back. This is not wasting tax money! If you guys didnt know, we have to buy all the food we eat. We dont have a special card the city gives us that we can use to buy what ever we want. It comes right out of our pockets.

And were do u think we get that food to cook from? Do we pull it out of our holly jolly butt hole? You never really know how many people are gonna be at ur station that shift(its called being detailed) so you never know how much food to have. We go out and get the food to cook for the shift. Sometimes ur able to bring it in but not always.

Now im gonna walk away from the computer before i get an infraction. Your an idiot :irked:

:headbang2

i don't really care i don't see much wrong with it...
