Worst tank accident?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My worst was when my 55 sprung a small leak while I was at work (12 hour work day). Of course the spot that the leak was cause it to spray right on the power outlet (fun fun). Got home and noticed it was leaking so I set up a tank to put everything in. About half way through emptying out the tank the whole thing gave way with water going everywhere. Always fun on the 2nd floor. Needless to say every towel in the house was wet and we had a nice full shop vac.

180g tank (FW) with wet/dry. Pipes weren't glued and one of them worked loose. About 130-150g of water soaked the house. Fortunately no casualties. But that was a late night of cleaning up.

Yesterday my 60 gallon sump under my 210 gallon fw tank sprung a leak. I had to drain everything in order to move the stand and replace the sump. :nilly:
Luckly all my fish are fine. I had a kiddie pool for my dog and apparently it works well for fish :)

When I was 16, I was once topping off my saltwater tank with RO water, and since my RO filter was extremely slow (it would take about an hour to fill the tank up two inches) I would just let it run and do other things. Well, over the course of this hour, I forgot I was running it, and the whole family went out to dinner, by the time we got back, enough water had overflowed from the tank to cause the kitch ceiling to cave in. Now, just to make things extra crappy, we were moving and had sold the house, and the people who had bought it were coming the next day to check one last time to make sure everything was ok before they signed the paperwork, and we lost the buyer.

the worst for me was when I woke up the next morning and my out-flow on my sump had been disconnected and was shooting the water all over my floor.. Its was my 300 gallon and I loss about 50 gallon of water.. suck cleaning all the water up..

Two days ago I had a tank crash in my saltwater 55 gallon tank. A dumb sea cucumber died which killed the other which killed off all my inverts, killed my blue hippo tang, flame tail, horse shoe crab, blue damsel, I was so pi$$ed I was about to throw the towel in on that one. Over that last two days I had to switch what was left in my tank to another tank, quick cycle and about puke at the smell of the tank. So now I need to flush out (rinse) the sand. You know its really bad when something that you tried to kill before but were unsuccessful just all die at once. BristleWorms....

Have my T.Miurus (Congo) puffer in a 29G. Pretty much a lurker except for a few minutes in the morning (begs to get fed). Well one afternoon before work, I notice him moving funny- kinda doing circles and headstands. Panicked and grabbed the test kit. Ammonia at just under 0.25ppm but the pH had dropped to under 6- yikes. Tried to catch him to move to a temporary tank but he puffed (not good- stressed already). 3in fish was the size of a softball. So just left him calm down and did a very big (almost 90%) water change. He was alright- found the piece of shrimp he had hid and the ammonia went down. The pH thing we never did figure out (started to drop again after the water change). Switched from using a HOB Magnum filter with biowheel to using it without biowheel and just the pleated filter in it with a Penguin 200 on the tank- since the switch the pH has been stable around 7.2.

are tank leaks really that common? are most of these leaking glass or acrylic or both?
