I have been told that wild fish tend not to have much color in the wild and I was on wikipedia and they said that koi would turn back into their wild color which is grey or black.

I have found that their colors are better in the wild as they get more nutrients from natural sources...

I know someone who has an old lake they dumped koi into, and they are amazing in color... you can see them a mile from the road they are on because they are so bright.

Wikipedia is def not the best place for info.

Genetics plays a big part of koi. Their color is either going to flourish or fade.

Many people place Koi in mud ponds for years.. this is to encourage growth and color enhancement.. they do not revert back to their "natural" colors.

i worked at the quinebaug valley state trout hatchery in central village. i have no degrees but have studied aquaculture for 4 years throughout high school in an ffa vocational agricultural program. it was only a seasonal position however while stocking trout we happened upon the pond. i asked around to all the full time guys and tried to find out what i could. there is actually no degree required to work for the dep if you get in on an entrance level position. unfortunatly the aquaculture program i was in however focused more on food species channel cats tilapia and hyprid striped bass etc and not so much on the aquarium/ ornamental pond aspect

ah, ok.. you're looking at 2 different spectrums of fish. lol.

IMHO, if you want to get into selling koi, look into a good koi breeder in the states, and get your Aquaculture license. I recommend BlackWater in Florida.

It's gonna be more of a risk/hassle to sell ones from the lake... IF it has KHV, someone will buy it, and then come back to you because all their fish died.

I know that siamese fighting fish are bland in color in the wild. I stayed in Thailand for awhile and they have regulated siamese fighinting fish matches and all they fought were wild caught fish and they were all bland in color. That's all I know, The Doctor.

I'm a certified KHA (Koi Health Advisor)- lol. Comes with the territory.

I've bought a 30" Japanese Import for $150.. I bought a 14" Japanese import for $450.

It's the imports that make the money. :naughty:

pic 1- $150 and thin from the pre ship fast of food
pic 2- $450 and thriving

See the difference?

The glitter is called Gin Rin. The markings make it an ochiba. (o-chee-buh OR o-cheh-buh)

They are both considered Ochiba, but I have never seen one like my first pic.. it's also poor quality.

But she's an absolute sweetie.. She lets me pet her, and pick her up right out of the pond into the air. lol.
