Would a gar do well with thse fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
BTW, They will be living in a 180 gallon growout for a maximum of 2 years. In this time I will be saving up for the 300...

I would buy the 300 now but I have no space for it.

If I had space for the 300 now I wouldnt even bother with the 180, but since my house is small at the moment I have too. But I will be moving in two years and will then buy the 300 gallon.

once again the dimensions of the tank are whats important, not the volume. i wouldnt recomend two gar an a black aro though. maybe just one black and one gar. use your best judgement. a gar grows about an inch or more per month. mine is now 17" long and is just now starting to slow down. so with proper care in 2 years a gar could reach 18-20 inches.

I wish I could have two gar! Thats why I was wondering about the spotted as they get a tad smaller then the florida..

Do you think it would be better if I waited until I got the 300(dont know exact dimensions will post them in a second)

and then introduce another gar of similar size to the aro and florida?

I really wnat more then two fish though.

I'm thinking about a Clown knife..

The dimensions of the 300 are: 96 x 30 x 25 tall

Thanks for your help.

the florida and spotted in captivity grow to about the same size. your idea sounds great to me. buying the black aro and one gar then introducing the next one into the new tank at similar size. the 180 i am in the process of setting up for my florida is 6'x2'x25".

Cool! I'll just wait until I get the 300 then I'll introduce another florida thats the same size as my aro and the other gar.

I was worried about it getting a little cramped in the 180 with three fish that get so big! I'm glad that I can get enother one once I set-up the 300 though. I'm sure the gar will grow well in the 180 with only one tank mate.

I'm going to take driftwood and make it form an over hang in one corner of the tank and put plants infront of it so the gar or aro can lurk.

I'm going to put lots of plants throught my tank to cover the bottom.

I was thinking Java fern and amazon swords. I dont really know what else though. Just want good cover for the Gar.

I will be setting up the 300 different from the 180, the 300 wioth have larger peices of driftwood in the left and right corner and a small one for the middle of the tank.

I just want it to look really nice and natural. Thank you for your help!

I will post many pictures once I get my arowana and gar in there new home, and will post even more once they are moved to the 300.

I was thinking, I could keep the aro and gar in the 300 for a while, and use the 180 as a growout for a smaller florida gar to then be introduced to the 300.

Once again, thank you for yor help.

always gald to help. i used to have my gar tank planted but one day they just all started to die. i didnt change any of the tank parameters they just died after having them for over 6 months??? i do love planted tanks. i am getting my 180 set up on sunday! i am sure my florida will be loving it! ill post pics of mine up and running also. i am in the process of growing out a silver aro to keep w/ the gar. i got the silver at 1.5" and it is now
around 6". when you do get the 300 try to get someting that is around 3' wide. that will help provide adequate turning space for the gar. when do you plan on getting you tank and fish?

It's going to be a while until I get my tank and fish all set-up.

I am in the process of selling a dirtbike(Dont need it, My Dads giving me one of his harleys once I get my license!) so Im going to use some of the money for a tank set-up.

I dont even have the add up for the dirtbike yet, but I want to get some information compiled before I do anything seriouse, so trhats why I am asking questions now.

Glasscages.com's 300 gallon wide is 30 inches wide. Doesnt really sound like a "Wide" to me.

They have a few different types of 300 gallons tanks. I want glass though as they dont have weird tops like acrylic tanks do. I'll look more on Glasscages for a tank of 3' feet width.

I'm probalby only going to be able to spend 900 dollars on my 180 set-up with filtration, lighting and plants, etc, etc, I'll be up in that range. I'm building my own stand from DIY plans from MFK to cut some costs.

But I'll have a while to save up for my 300 once I get my 180 so I'll look around after the 180's set up.

I like planted tanks alot aswell. I was going to get a pair of johanna or sveni pikes for the 180 but I decided to get a black arowana and now the gar.

After I get the aro and gar into the 300 I'll probably buy a decent size florida and put it in the 180 until he's big enough to hang with the big boys.

Then I'll probably use the 180 for CA/SA cichlids or Crenicichla.

But I have a while to think about what Im doing with the 180 after I get the 300 because i havent even bough it yet!

Going to put something in it once the aro and gar outgrow is though!

Please do post some pics of your tank!

Well, the 300 wide is 900 dollars wich would be more easy to save toward, but it is only 30'' wide...

I decided to get the 375 wich is 96 x 36 x 25 tall Its 1,400 wich is that much money, a little bit more then the 300. I want the best for my fish, so I will get the 375 when it is needed, a little more money to save, but it will be worth it to have happy fish!

that 375 would be awsome! i eventually want to do a 300-500 gallon tank, but for now i only have an appartment and the landlord would not approve! when i buy my own house though...

Yeah same here, I rent and dont have enough room for the 300 (doors to small!) but I will be moving into a larger home in two years, therefor I will then setup the 375!
