I've got a 65g with a Jack Dempsey, 2 senegal bichirs and 8 tiger barbs.
I've also got a 20g which currently has 4 convicts, (i'm pretty sure its 3 females and a male)

I think Its becoming apparent which female is going to stay and be part of my breeding pair. Would I be OK to put the other 2 females in the 65? They're about an inch smaller than the the JD but still too large to be considered by the sen's.

IMO no, because i think your 65 is already over stocked. If you was to rid of some of the stock in the 65 then by all means go for it. As yur stocking list for the 65 i would no suggest it.

Thats kind of how I feel about it...everything is fine as is, there's no aggression, plenty of territory between the bichirs and the jd, the barbs aren't getting messed with at all. But I'd be worried my filter (xp3) won't keep up with more cichlids in the tank, and the convicts wouldn't have anything left to claim without fighting the dempsey for it. I was only considering it since they're females and are supposed to be a little less territorial.

I'm going to keep them in the 20 for a while longer to make sure I keep the right pair, then its (hopefully) back to the LFS with the other two.

Which is also what I was considering...

I don't know if it makes me a sick person...but I'm kind of of the opinion that if I add them and they end up getting killed and eaten, well its natural selection. I've heard it can be difficult to get an lfs to take convicts anyways (as they're SO common) so if I CAN'T get them back to a store, its either stay with the breeding pair and DEFINITELY die, or get a chance in the 65 to throw blows with the JD and see if they make it.

I'm thinking about turning a powerhead I have into a sponge filter to get a bit more mechanical/biological filtration in the 65, so if I do end up getting that working I think I'd have plenty of filtration for what I have going on. And I have plans of adding either a second xp3 or an AC70/something similar to do a lot more mechanical and a touch more biological.

I dunno...I'm torn.

I had another thought occur to me...

My plan with the breeding pair is to feed the spawn to my sen's (and JD if he goes for em)

If I add fry to the tank with the 2 females, will they care about them at all? Without parents in the tank, will the convicts take ownership of the fry?

It will be fine but no doubt the JD will breed with one of them.

My opinion, do NOT own American cichlids unless you have at least a 100 gallon tank.

How big are your bichirs and JD? If they are not yet full grown I say go for it.

Really?? What do they make? Will they destroy my bichirs when they go after the fry?

I can see your point, but I think just the JD and few convicts will be ok. I have no grand plans of adding more cichlids to this tank, and I'm not even 100% sold on keeping the convicts, although I think I'm about to go ahead and move those two over...

Why can I not edit my own posts sometimes? Is there a time limit on it?

Anyways, the two larger females are moved, its done. The JD is chasing them around little bit but not too bad. The convicts almost seem to team up and tease him a little bi sometimes.

They seem to be ignoring the bichirs...even shared their hiding spot behind the heater for a second:p

I think if they survive the JD they'll be fine :) Now I just need to save up for that extra filter I want....
