It's a odd combination of fish.

A lot of people keep an odd combination of fish. If it's what they like then more power to them. ;)

The one problem I could see with the setup is if the male JD decides to pair up and breed with one of the females.

Yeah...I went ahead and moved the two larger females last night. So far its seems to be ok. The JD is spending a good amount of time chasing the con's around, but he's not tearing them up. I didn't realize when they were in separate tanks but he's almost twice their size...

Luckily the convicts are ignoring my bichirs and tiger barbs, so I'm still not too worried about anything tearing up my bichirs. The convicts do seem to stick together for the most part.

I'm gonna be in a pickle if the JD does decide to breed with one of them...I'd want to see the babies, but I wouldn't want to deal with a parental JD & Convict in my tank, and I also haven't fell on either side of the fence with hybridization so I don't really know how I'd feel about it if it happened :\
It will be fine but no doubt the JD will breed with one of them.
Really? I wouldnt think that they would be too terribly eager to pair up

Do Convicts often hybridize with sp outside of the Archocentrus, Amatitlania, or Cryptoheros.

convicts will pair up with just about anything. The JD on the other hand may be a little more picky but there's no way to say for sure.

Yeah I was under the impression that alot of people kept JDs and Cons together.

I did some searching on the Hybrid forums and apparently people have had them hybridize, one member even posted a pic of an adult Con x JD

Regardless, the OP might run into aggression problems even if the JD doesn't pair with one of the cons. If a pairing does occur, as aforementioned, it will get ugly

EDIT: A link to see pics of the JD x Con http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49585&highlight=jdxcon

Thats a pretty looking fish...if they do mate I'd be hard pressed to not let them mature...

Thanks for posting this! All kinds of CA crossess are shown on fish fourums but this is the very first time I have ever seen this cross. From what I understand from reading the innitial post on this thread , it is the result of a male con sneaking in during the mating act, and fertilizing some of the eggs, and not the result of an actual pairing of the two species. I know it is POSSIBLE for any CA cichlid to cross breed with another CA, but it's really not a cross you ever seem to see. If a cross between the 2 species really was a likely outcome, given the number of times the 2 species have been kept together, one would think that the cross should be common , rather then the rarity it seems to be. Bear in mind that the 2 species have been kept togther in tanks for decades and decades, since the 1950's and long before that. Long before other CA species were available.

In the mid-1970's I seen a Convict X FM cross. It was a well known possible cross at the time, and was even mentioned in fish books. That was the very first CA cross I ever seen, though even that really wasn't all that common despite the fact that FM and convicts were often kept in the same tanks. But a JD X Con cross ----- this is the first time I have ever seen it.

Given the number of times I have had lesbian pairs of female cons, in the abscence of a male con, and the number of times I have seen such pairs in other people's tanks, I reaaly think that this is a more likely outcome. I've had female cons pair up with each other in the prescence of lone CA males, including JD, though of course female cons don't always pair up with each other. Such pairs were never much of a problem in my tanks as they claimed little space. Most broke up after their eggs went bad, but I had one lesbian pair that remained together as a stable pair for almost 2 years.

Yeah, I tend to agree that a JD x Con pair is probably pretty rare, for alot of the reasons you mentioned.

many many many people on these forums keep JDs with Cons, and I think hybridization of these two species is pretty rare

if anyone is of a different opinion or have contrary evidence let us know, kind of interesting
