Would this be safe?

Like someone said up there, with all of those fish fully grown the tank would be a little overstocked, but convicts dont use alot of space or eat too much and while they are growing and lets be honest there will be a time where you decide to either buy a larger tank or move some of the existing fish or maybe sell them so yes for now its fine to put them with eachother just keep an eye that everyones playing nice

As long as the male JD has the option of mating with a female JD, he will more than likely choose her over a Convict. I've kept pairs together without any cross breeding problems. If a male JD is kept with only female Cons as mating options then you run the risk of having hybrids. Keeping oppsite sexes of fish together can be tricky. Sometimes they breed with some very unexpected mates.

The JD is a lone male with 2 female con's, so we'll see.

So far its working nicely. The dempsey chases the convicts around but nothing too violent. For the first time last night I saw the con's peck a tiny bit at my bichirs but only when they accidentally crossed paths. The bichirs don't really mess with anything, although I have seen the larger of the two challenge the JD in his driftwood cave...just swims circles around the JD as he tries to peck him away from his territory then eventually swims off...its pretty comical actually.

We'll see how it works out in the long term. If anything goes bad the convicts I think will be the first to go, and if further separation is needed I'll either get a tank for the two sen's or for the JD, but it probably won't be possible until I move into a house.

the main problem i see is the bichirs, they get pretty big pretty quick and may end up to large for your tank, my ornate has turned quite a few unsuspecting fish into an expensive snack..

He shouldn't have that problem with Sens. They don't get as large or as aggressive as some of the larger growing bichirs. But they will pick off fry and small fish without question. His cichlids should grow large enough and be aggressive enough to remain off the dinner menu.

No..the 65 is good enough with the fish in it..but im shocked your tiger barbs are still alive..i wouldnt put mine with a jack dempsey..but idk think of a different plan maybe?

i ment more for the size really they can still reach upto a good foot in length and depending on the tank dimensions could be a bit of a tight fit.

That's true.

Dimensions are 36x18 on the bottom...maybe 19 deep. I think they'll be fine for quite some time. From what I've learned, they'll probably get to 8-10 inches in the first year or so, after that it'll be quite some time before/if they reach 12" long, by which point I'll almost certainly have a 4-5' tank to put them in.

And yeah the barbs are still alive...my JD doesn't seem to be too aggressive, although he is probably only 3" at this point, so we'll see what happens as he grows. Right now he just pecks at the bichirs once in a while and chases the convicts around. The barbs get 100% ignored by everything in the tank, and some them are less than inch still. So I'm not terribly worried about them.

I think the tank is going to work out fine for at least a year before I need to upgrade tanks or move anything around. They'll at least give me time to get into a house where I can afford to put another tank (if they know whats good for them:ROFL:)

yeah your dimensions sound fine then, all i would do is keep an eye on the bichirs its suprising how much they can fit in their mouths, with the JD if its anything like mine you could keep it with neon tetras and he wouldnt bother them he's a total wimp!
