Would this tank work well with Large Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
But yeah.. Say I want a Red Devil / FlowerHorn type cichlid in there for sure.. and the striped raphael catfish... what are some other cichlid tank mates that could live in this size aquarium with the red devil / flowerhorn?

Jacks, Texas, most Amphilophids, Firemouths, Convicts, Jewels, possibly Buttekofferi, RTMs, Jags, Loisellei, Yellowjackets, Pikes, Acaras, Earth-eaters, GTs, Mayans, the list goes on and on ; you could do a lot with that tank with a little imagination and the more caves and hideplaces you build the more fish you can add.

Set the whole thing up with as many caves possible then wait a few days and make more caves after you realize what space you still have left open to make more. Start the bottom layer with long pieces of sterile slate, bridged by pieces of sterile PVC pipe joints and make cave-like arches. When you collect, always figure 2 "stackers" for every long flat bridging piece.

THEN, go out and buy a bunch of juvenile and sub-adult fish and let them fill in the gaps. I generally make sure the least aggressive species are the LARGEST to start off. The nasty ones will grow quickly

Wow, and I thought we got robbed in Australia with tank prices. I got my 6x2x2 with matching cabinet new for $900AU (similar to CAN). But then again we are an isolated island in the middle of nowhere. Thought with you guys being so close to the states it would be much cheaper.

In any case, this is my stocking, which I think will work well for you, as all the fish are smaller than the oscar so should have no issue turning around.

I run
- 2 x Aquael Unimax 700 canisters with about 12L of seachem pond matrix for bio and nitrate reduction
- 2 x AC 110 HOB filters with sponges and purigen for mechanical/chemical.

Your tank looks like it has a hood on it, so you can't really put on HOBs unless you cut out part of the hood.

My FX6 hum is too loud (the tank is right next to my ear in my study) so I stopped using it. Would be fine in a large living room sitting a distance away. Just be mindful of that. If ur going with purely canisters and don't mind the noise, 2 x FX6 or FX5 is fantastic. They do excellent mechanical filtration due to the sponges in each of the 3 levels. And cleaning them is extremely easy for a canister, as the pump is on the bottom. Also you don't have to prime them for same reason, as they have an auto-prime electronic circuit.

What about something like: Tiger Oscar, Flowerhorn, Black Belt, Black Diamond Cichlid, a couple Bristlenose Pleco, a couple Striped Raphael Catfish, maybe a Centrodoras brachiatus or a Bolt catfish.

So, that is like 4 medium-large sized cichlids.. and 4 smaller catfish with maybe 1 more medium sized catfish tossed in as well.

I will more than likely buy a Eheim 2262 to supplement the Fluval FX5.

Aquariums are real expensive in Canada.

$800-1000+ seems to be the going rate for a basic used 180 gallon with cheap welded metal stand and really simple wet/dry setup.
I'm pretty sure I've seen new 180 gallons aquariums going for a couple grand. And that is just the glass aquarium, wood stand, and pre-drilled holes for a wet/dry setup.

depending on where your located but there is a dealer who sells really nice 180 gallons for 700 in alberta.

Yeah, but then you need a couple hundred for lighting and several hundred for filter.. and the stand isn't as nice.

Still saved money buying used.

I live in Calgary BTW.

This guy is also selling his 180 soon. may be worth looking into. anyhow good luck finding what you need :) I'm currently looking for another monster tank in the next little while . I'm not personally from Calgary but where I'm from its really hard to find exactly what I'm looking for unless I either do it myself or have it shipped. Fortunately a LFS finally opened up that is very accommodating to their regular customers . :)
