This guy is also selling his 180 soon. may be worth looking into. anyhow good luck finding what you need :) I'm currently looking for another monster tank in the next little while . I'm not personally from Calgary but where I'm from its really hard to find exactly what I'm looking for unless I either do it myself or have it shipped. Fortunately a LFS finally opened up that is very accommodating to their regular customers . :)

Awesome! Thank you so much for the help :).

A couple of those catfish and even the oscar sound nice. I wish my tank was cycled already.

your welcome quickstrike.

I got pretty close to buying this:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-fish/edmonton/270-gallon-drop-down-aquarium/1139264387

"96"x 24" x 36" at the deepest and the shallow end is 24".

I asked if it came with a sump and he said: "Do have a sump it would be an extra 400 as it's brand new"

So, it was going to cost $1400 for the aquarium + sump and another $100 if I wanted him to plumb everything together + whatever it costs for a quality return pump.

I was looking for something more plug and play. If he said he had a 270 Gallon aquarium for $1500, all ready for fish, I would have seriously considered it.

And to add to the thread. Is this true? "Aquariums need at least 2 inches of gravel to look their best. Here's the formula: You need 1 pound of gravel for every gallon of your tank, to make 1 inch. So to get 2 inches of gravel you need 2 pounds for every gallon. So you need 360 pounds of gravel for get 2 inches worth in the bottom. "

Does 10MM Washed Rock sound good for a [mostly] Central American Cichlid Tank.
I was thinking of buying from Burnco: https://shop.burncolandscape.com/products/10mm-washed-rock-2214.html

When they say it is recommended for Aquariums, I'm not sure if that means an aquarium with Minnows and Tetras or a tank with full grown Cichlids.

They also have 14MM and 20MM Washed Rock.. would 14MM be better? Gotta remember that the gravel needs to be sifted through and lifted up by the Python Gravel Cleaners suction. If they are too big and heavy, gravel cleaning won't be effective.

I use black diamond sand blasting sand. Larger cichlids tend to pick the gravel up with their mouths and can scratch the inside of the tank. Or worse. spit the gravel into your filtration system. sand isn't so bad and you wouldn't be planting real plants with most larger cichlids so you would only in reality have to put an inch of sand in. it makes it easier vacuuming .

I wish I could have that tank its sweet. I have a veja who decided it was cool to spit sand into the intake of my fx5 and by the time I realized there was sand in the fx5 the bottom 3 inches was full and the impeller was fried. So I decided the next tank ( the larger one I have. ) I switched to a sump with a laguna 4200 . plumbing was not as bad as I thought it would be and I put ceramic tile in the bottom instead of the sand.

Do you have any pics of the ceramic tile bottom? That would definitely be the easiest :). I guess I couldn't have any catfish with fragile 'whiskers' then.

For the background I was thinking of using plasti dip. Either Blaze Blue like this:
or Black

Hey just figugred I could throw out a stock list for you because I'm,bored maybe you could go a more peaceful route you could get 1 oscar of your choice I prefer tigers, 8 silver dollars, a Jack Dempsey or green terror, a fire mouth, and a bottom feeder like some type of syno cat preferably!

Ill take a picture right now. and post it :) it looks pretty good. brightens it up quite a bit since I have a black backround

Here's a pic not the best though as you can see there is a little bit of sand . in the other corner I didn't tile the last 4 inches of the tank and stuck some black diamond in there so they still had something to play with. Makes a huge difference with cleaning . ( much ) nicer
