Would this tank work well with Large Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I saw another thread that recommended this for a 180 gallon:

"Why a pair? Do a small comm tank. With 5 male cichlids of different species!

Jag
Midas
Festae
Green terror
Vieja species"

A bunch of people agreed that it would work.

But would it work with 80"x15.5-22.5"x29"
vs 72"x24"x24"

??

Basically am I going to be hating myself if I go with a 15.5-22.5" width aquarium for largish Cichlids?

I haven't owned an aquarium in over a decade and have always dreamed of owning a 180+ Gal aquarium.

You will be fine and I will be honest here I don't agree with a lot of stocking stuff people do here I personally feel like a 125 is adequate for like 2 oscars max and a 180 should only house 3 oscar siszed fish in my opinion you could probably do a midas green terror a jaguar and an armored catfish and not be overstocked

Honestly, i would say wait for a traditional sized 180G to pop up, nothing worst than bringing home what you imagine to be your dream tank, just to find out you can't house a lot of the fish you like... Especially for later down the line...

Any other opinions? This setup is selling for around $700 CDN used.. so it seems like a pretty decent deal. Would most of you have no problems with a 15.5" Width tank? Is it that much of a shortcoming?

the midas green terror a jaguar and an armored catfish sounds pretty cool.. I think I could be happy with that.

^ i think ultimately only you will know if the 15.5" width will be a limiting factor based on what dream fish you hope to keep...

If you want fish that reach say 16" - 18"+ then you'll most likey want a more traditional sized tank, on the other hand, if you only ever want to own small to mid size fish under 13", then this could be the perfect tank for you...

Thanks for all your help!!

Arrgh.. if only it had more width..

Is there an easy to use site that will show a chart of cichlids in order by length?

So, you said under 13" fish for 15.5" width?.. OK.. I will start searching google myself.. but if you have any suggestions you can name off quickly, that would be greatly appreciated!

You will be fine, as long as you stay away from umbee and Dovii it's very rare for any other American cichlid to pass 15.5 inch. It will look nicer than a regular 180 too...

So a 14" Oscar or 15" Red Devil won't get all stressed out trying to turn?

Here are some crappy pictures of the setup

The stand is a little better looking than the usual metal rail I see with most used aquarium ads.
