Opportunity came knocking, but I wouldn't let him in the door.
;-)
Lol.

I think most criminals probably won't even knock, but enter another way. we have a false sense of security that controlling our doors makes us safe. people with really bad intentions will target us at our weakest, not our most watchful places and moments.
sad, but true.

they often knock to see if the coast is clear ..especially of people or dogs.. thats why if you do not answer a knock don't assume they go away... stay vigilent with phone in hand ... i like the one with the remote for car... push the button and your ALARM goes off....that would scare anyone away and attracts attention .

I actually just had a hot tar cauldron installed over my door for this exact problem. That, and my band of merry men who sit on the roof playing lutes and throwing knives at dartboards keeps me safe.

as a teen we had someone break into our house when myself and a friend where sleeping down stairs right next to the door they entered from... they must have seen us once in the house because they grabbed what they could in a bee-line out another doorway( found out later they where armed)... so every night I have to check the doors even now. My husband works in inner city Milwaukee, doing internal theft ect... ie he talks to the police on a regular basis and catches people stealing w/ his team ect.

So no.. I do not answer my door if I don't know who you are, unless I'm expecting someone. I don't answer the door armed but I do have access to a firearm. I was raised in a family who did not own a gun ect... but my husband hunts ect along with his job. It wouldn't be completely unreasonable to have someone follow him ect holding a grudge ect...One of the reasons we're "paranoid" but in reality for us its just an average day. I knew that when I married him, and he takes our safety very seriously.

What i allways say...

Good, old fashioned, primitive, mastiffs.

They may come in. They will not get out.

Seriously now.

( gone for a week and guns pop all over....)

Seriously again. It realy is interesting to observe the differences between cultures. In my country ( depending, of course, on the aspect of the people wanting to take a peek ) i would never consider it a danger from the onset, someone openly wanting to see my house.

Has happenned on my farm. In here we do not consider people as criminals on first reaction.

Not here in Manchester Miguel some parts of this place are crazy :P
