its not about living in dangerous cities. i dont exactly live in the safest place in the US, but ive never had to use my guns in self defense, and i hope i never have to. but if i do, ill be ready. reality is most gun owners will probably never use their guns to defend themselves.

also, a lot of people outside the US are blind to the fact that not all gun owners buy guns for self defense. to many, this is a HOBBY! ever thought of that? yeah i know, crazy Americans, but oh well! we have our guns because we love them and we're not giving them up just because some people are scared of them.

you say im paranoid, i say youre living in denial

Everyone outside the US knows that some people have shooting/firearms as a hobby, thats why its an olympic sport! (in which BTW, USA only won 6 medals out of a possible 45) People through out the world are quite comfortable with people owning weapons for hunting or sport (clay bird shooting etc), and I can't think of a single country that has a total ban on firearms. What the rest of the world (well, me anyway) doesn't understand is why in America you can get a permit to carry a concealed weapon, smoke crack daily for the next 20 years til your brain is fried, and still be allowed to carry a concealed weapon.

JD7.62, could you please elaborate on some of the "atrocities [that] could have been prevented in Europe if more people had their own means to defend them selves"?

Convicted felons are not allowed to even handle a gun, let alone own one, let alone conceal one.

Are you serious? It would have been a bit harder to round up 6 milliion people if they were armed.

...

Well...he didn't say get caught smoking crack...

But thats a problem anywhere i guess.

So you're suggesting the holocaust would never have happened if jews were allowed to carry concealed weapons. OK.

jcardona1; My understanding of the concealed weapons permit thing (as explained to me by an American friend) is that you sit a test, go through a few assessments, and once you have the permit you have it for good. No annual reassessments to make sure you haven't turned into a nutcase, nothing. If that is the case then IMO it is just crazy. Even our drivers licenses get re-tested every 10 years!

I'll resist the temptation to make a witty remark about Americans knowledge of the outside world... ;)

Yes, believe it or not, America isn't the only country that has people who like guns. New Zealand (as does Australia, Europe and most other countries I'd assume) has a large population of hunters and people who enjoy shooting stuff (black powder clubs etc). I have many memories of going possum, rabbit, and duck shooting as a kid and teenager on friends farms, as do thousands of other kiwis. I'm not sure how many of them would support allowing people to carry a concealed weapon in public though, hell our police don't even carry guns on them 95% of the time!
