I just want to know how he came to this conclusion. Is this a hyposthesis without any evidence? Did he gather this info from a forum, from other internet sources, where/how? As far as I know no one knows if this is in fact a spieces, or a sub-species or a decaying GATF. I too am pretty versed in ATF lit. and I have spoken with the biggest ATF importer on this very issue.

Then lets put our Brilliant ATF minds together and figure this controversy out...
BATF rules real species or not:headbang2

Having seen more then my fair share of decaying fish....LARGE decaying fish, I can assure you the fish posted is NOT decaying. The first thing that goes is the eyes and you can clearly see that they are intact. Obviously the fish is dead, but it is not decaying.

Like the black gars, I think that this fish pictured is just mellanistic...kind of the opposite trait of leustistic (I cant spell for crap). It is more common to see mellanistic adult fish in the wild because the white and albino ones are easy prey when young and rarely make it to adult hood.

you may be right about melanistic. well, the one posted here is that of a "large eyed" tiger, imported as goliaths, as a contaminant, different from vittatus, and forskalli. Nobody knows what it'll grow up to be, only time will tell.

Ive been in personal contact with Douglas Dann himself. Hes the one who made the GATF world famous. You can google his name re: Goliath Tiger Fish. Hes been my info source as well as Dr. Snook whos the most knowledgeable ichthyologist on this sp. The tannins in the the black river are the reason the GATF are black. There seems to be slight variations in appearance but there all GATF. Its no different then the Hoplias Aimara from Xingu in Brazil look slightly different than the Aimara from Venezuela. But same species-

Maybe one of these days a rich Japanese importer will pay big $$ to have someone go and get a Black GATF.
