Know one has never had one so its speculation at this point. Im sure it might lose some color but bill retain some as well is my guess.

At least in mammals, skin color is caused by melonomma. The color is dependant on four things I can think of, and of those four only one is constant.

1. Genetics, this provides the "base coat" I guess you could say and of course is constent in an individual and nearly always as a species.
2. Ulta violet light exposure....tanning, and of course this is variable dependant on how much exposure.
3. Diet, again obviously variable and diet has the least effect.
4. Genetic mutations, albinoisim and the like can cause drastic changes but I guess you could consider this to be part of genetics. This only applies to the individual rather then a species as a whole.

If the black is caused by diet or even tannins Id be willing to bet the fish will lose its color in captivity and not warranted the extremly high price Id assume one would bring. Like I said in all my earlier posts, I think the first fish pictured just has more mellonoma then normal for the species. Since such a trait is genetic it is possible that a rather isolated population will have a higher ratio of "black" individuals then other populations so perhaps a viable source for these black GATF could be found...

Douglas Dann caught mostly larger fish by means of angling with hook and line. I've not seen very many pictures of young goliaths pre 2006, and certainly non from Douglas Dann himself.

The black ones were of a few specimens photographed quite some time ago, easily more than 10 years ago.

Aimara-would you be able to provide some of Dr. Snook's studies and findings here for us to see? The original descriptions for this group of fish is over 100 years old, and really not as solid as we would lik them to be.

As for the picture All happy fish posted-who knows what it will turn out to be, your guess is as good as mine. I've been betting heavy on the fact that its not a vittatus, not a what we now call "goliath", not a "nigerian forskalli"., to me it has a bigger eye and longer snout than most vittatus and definitely bigger face than forskalli.

Do remember though, within the same species, there could be a great deal of variations in color and body proportions. So that means the more samples that are taken, the higher the correlation may be. Just think of gold fish, or a motoro stingray

Maybe one of these days a rich Japanese importer will pay big $$ to have someone go and get a Black GATF.
And I will be right there waiting to pick one up.

The pics of the black GATF pics that is floating around the net came from my book that i scanned and posted years ago. I have taxonomy of the hydros in paper form sent to my from Dr Snooks.
