Tanganyikan Spiny Eel
Mastacembelus ellipsifer

Size: 1.5’
pH: 8.0-9.5
Tank size: 50G/Individual
Country of origin: Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia
Diet: Live foods, can be weaned onto frozen and even dry, albeit meaty foods
Temperament: Relatively peaceful, though predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Mastacembelus ellipsifer is one of, and probably the most popular of, the numerous spiny eels exclusive to Lake Tanganyika. Because of their natural environment, these fish require a higher pH than most other spiny eels. This species is among the rarer Mastacembelus seen in the trade. Does well in tanks with Tanganyikan cichlids, which they cohabitate with in the wild.

Balunga Betta
Betta balunga

Size: 2”
pH: 5.5-7.0
Tank size: 5G/Individual
Country of origin: Indonesia, Malaysia
Diet: Most dry, frozen, and live foods small enough will work
Temperament: Aggressive, though could possibly be kept in a community tank under the right circumstances
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

And that’s six months! I’d like to thank everyone who has supported this thread over the months. Betta balunga is a very obscure Betta species carried by very few breeders and vendors. These fish are also relatively small for their genus. This particular species has a wider range than some other Betta sp. included in this thread, though it is still somewhat limited. Clear sexual dimorphism, as shown above. (Left: male, right: female) Part of the akarensis complex.

Some reports claim that this species can survive in salinity up to about 1.015, though this is unverified.

I used to have a dozen or so of these guys in my turtle tank, they were about 15-20cm and growing but they died because of the blooming fires heating up the area. They also taste really nice. The Asian restaurants round here get in 25cm ones and work magic on them, making them amazing.
