Country of origin: Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Guinea, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Taiwan
Diet: Live foods. Can be weaned onto frozen
Temperament: Relatively peaceful, though predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.025 [Best off at around 1.010]

Description

Ending this week is one of the fish I’ve most looked forward to covering so far: Antennarius biocellatus. This fish is incredibly unique as it is widely considered to be the only freshwater or brackish member of its order. As you may know, this fish is a frogfish, and frogfish are part of the greater order Lophiiformes, also known as anglerfish, of which most people are only familiar with luminescent, deep-sea species, which are sometimes portrayed in popular media such as “Finding Nemo.” This fish is very special and distinct due to its tolerance of lower salinity. Despite this, it is perhaps better considered brackish.
Do the freshwater ones come like that? I always thought they were just brown.
Really a cool fish! I almost got one for my 36 gallon until I saw the price tag. One of the few fish where the marine one is MORE cost effective.

Chameleon Whiptail Catfish
Pseudohemiodon apithanos

Size: 7”
pH: 6.5-7.5
Tank size: 40G/Individual
Country of origin: Ecuador, Colombia
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Peaceful, though somewhat territorial. Easily outcompeted.
Temperature: 75-80° F
Description

Pseudohemiodon apithanos is a bizarre pleco relative hailing from the Caqueta basin. They are bottom dwellers. Though somewhat similar species are often imported and sold as the real deal, this species is actually quite rare. Many “Pseudohemiodon apithanos” sold in stores are, in fact, mislabeled

White-Edge Whipray
Fluvitrygon signifer

Size: 6.5’Lx2’W
pH: 6.5-7.5
Tank size: 2000G/Individual
Country of origin: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Generally calm. Very predatory and will eat any fish small enough. Known to be rather personable, and quite intelligent by fish standards
Temperature: 70-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.010

Description

Here’s one you’ve probably never heard of: Fluvitrygon signifer. Unbeknownst to many, there exist numerous freshwater stingray species outside of the Americas. This one in particular is an extremely rare Asian species that is completely capable of life in freshwater. It is very, very, uncommon for these elusive fish to make it to the western aquarium trade. NOTICE: The link provided above is to a website based in the UK. Most entries previous to this one contain US links. If you live outside of the UK, this fish may be particularly expensive to ship.

By the way, these fish probably do not often reach 6.5’. This is their maximum length, and due to the lack of research and information on this species, I don’t have any closer estimates as to a more common size.

Shadow Catfish
Hyalobagrus flavus

Size: 1.75”
pH: 6.5-7.5
Tank size: 7.5G/1 small group
Country of origin: Indonesia, parts of Borneo
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Hyalobagrus flavus is, by far, one of the smallest catfish available in the trade. They are similar in a number of ways to pygmy Corydoras catfish. These tiny fish are peaceful towards most, if not all tankmates. Obviously, care should be taken when choosing tankmates. These fish do best in schools.

Leopard Mandarin Perch
Siniperca scherzeri

Size: 1’
pH: 6.0-8.0
Tank size: 100G/Individual
Country of origin: China, Korea, Vietnam
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful towards tankmates too large to be eaten
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.005

Description

The second Siniperca species to appear on this thread, Siniperca scherzeri is a relatively small predator that is in many ways comparable to datnoids. These fish, though predatory, are not advised alongside overly aggressive tankmates, as it is possible they will be bullied. Often found in one of two color forms, either a leopard print-like black and yellow pattern, or golden mixed with white.
