I've had mine for two or three months now and it definitely is finicky.

I heard it's something to do with the glass? Like they rub they're nose a lot on it.
Come to think of it it does swim at an angle with its snout touching the bottom as it goes. The tank is bare bottomed.

I've had mine just under 2 years, see my signature. They do well for the most part. They eat well, but can be easily spooked sometimes.

I had mine for almost 6 years. Got him when he was about 3" and lost him when he was just under 14". He did extremely well. The first few months I think they feel out their surroundings and he did run down the glass opening and closing his mouth as he did but stopped this behavior when I added more structure to hide in/around. They are easily spooked and I almost lost mine once when he jumped out of the tank. My cat brought him to me and luckily it wasn't out of the water long and I had a hospital tank set up. That was when he was 6-7" long. He did have a permanent scar on his forehead after that though.

Fourteen inches wow!

Yeah...here he is with a 5" spot tail shiner...

Nice shot and I can see the mark on its head that you mentioned.
