fine, i'll see if I can't climb down a steep, unstable, collapsing canal bank infested with spiders and snakes and scare a 7 foot wild monitor out of it's den with my naked, grasping, tasty arm in order to take a picture.

It's kind of like the filter in our brain that should tell us "this is not a good idea" gets drowned out by our need to gain real, experiential, hands on knowledge of herps in the wild.
Thats caused me to get into trouble on more than one occasion, when the herp wasn't as excited as I was to "learn" about them.

Ok just kidding. Why insted of trying to force him into the open you dont make him came to you?
Monitors have a huge apetite and you could just lower to its level some eggs, chicken,meat ,etc and wait at a safe distance whit your camera. that would be much safer for both. I dont think that making him out of its den is a good idea. Youll endup biten, dirty and hurt. Bessides it will grab to much atencion, someone calls animal control and you can say by by monitor
. You lose your biology project but he will likely lose its life Also you could try to make friends whit it. As for this remenbar that the way for a lizard (or turtle,cat,dog,etc) heart must came for the "make him came to you" aproach. Lots of food,no sudden movs and no loud noises are good starting points.
