i would never own a dog if it had to live outside... just me... i want a family pet... and keeping a dog outside to me is like saying your on your own,,.. my feelings are they are worthy of all the comforts of home..

My 105lb German shepherd is outdoor, she refused housebreaking, and loved ripping doors off the hinges if she was in more than 5 mins, she hates being in.
She has a small room that leads to our main basement she sleeps in. It has a huge bed with blankets, pillows and whatever else of ours she wanted lol
It get vaccumed and cleaned once a week, and it's much warmer down there, and comfortably cool in the summer.

Our pittie and pom mix are indoors, they could survive outside anyway.

My 2 dogs both live indoors... "BUT" when i was growing up our hunting dogs (labs) always lived outide in the dog kennel. My dad ALWAYS took very good care of his dogs. They always had a very well insulated dog house and very clean kennels to stay in. They always seemed very happy and when it got cold they always got to come inside to sleep infront of the fireplace on their blanket.

My dog won't even go outside unless she really really has to.. And she won't even approach the door if it's raining.. LOL So inside here..

Also, unless you have your dogs chained up with a dingy doghouse I see nothing wrong with a happy outdoor dog.
Certain breeds shouldn't be out, but as long as they have a nice yard, plenty of exercise, attention and a nice, insulated dog house I see nothing wrong with it.
And indoor dog is not always happier than a dog who's outside.

:iagree: Its the human mentality that dogs are people that keeps dogs inside most of the time. (unless they need to be inside)
People think of their dogs as people, not dogs.

The dogs i talked about that lived outdoors where i used to live, i envited a couple of them in a few times and they wouldnt step foot inside the house. They would go in the garage when it rained, but I asked a few of the owners and they said the dogs preferred it outside.

IMHO, dogs belong outside. They're dogs, not people. Unless you have a min pin or some puny dog with no fur that needs to stay warm.

My thoughts exactly, our shepherds came in in severe weather, or the time we bred them(I disagree with my parents decision on that, but they both had great pedigrees) the female came in with her litter for a while.

The pittie is only in because of her hair, and because the shepherd tries to eat her now and then.
The pom mix again, because of her hair. It's long but thin.

Ugh, I hate when people try to humanize their dogs, in the long run it's bad for everyone. Coddling you DOG makes then think they're the pack leader, so when they put YOU in your place, you tell then "bad!" or worse, hit them, which leads to an unhappy and confused dog.
Mine know who their leader is, and they seem much happier for it, they don't have the responsibility of the pack on their shoulders.
I sounds like a complete nut unless you sped a lot of time training dogs, and researching :D

My dog stays inside unless I'm home then I let him hang out in the yard for as long as he wants so he can explore and chase squirrels, birds, insects etc. He always wants to come back in and sleep by my feet though once he gets his fill. I have noticed that almost every other house in my neighborhood has dogs and they all seem to keep them outside at all times. I can walk my dog anytime day or night and the same dogs are always out in the yard. It is cali though so it doesn't exactly get too cold but it can get exceptionally hot now and then which is why I choose to keep my boy in the A/C while I'm at work. It all depends on where you live and the breed of dog I guess...

I have a Shih tzu and a cocker doxie mix. They are basically indoor but I have a fenced yard and a doggie door. They like being outside most of the time but are in at night because of the cyotes. The little one thinks she is a german shepherd most of the time.

My pom does as well, lol she grew up around large GSDs, and thinks she's much larger than our pit, which has led to problems.
