YOUR FIRST PIRANHA?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when i was about ten my parents and i went to the mall. i went to the arcade for awile and headed to the pet store. got a baby red p and a small pack of brine shrimp for 5 bucks

I dabbled with rbp's 11+ years ago. I had 22 rbp's in a 55g. There was no MFK back then just trial and error.

I had several RBP, about 12". One day I was fixing the plants at the top of the tank and one of them came and just nicked my ring finger on the the right hand. Long story short, the ensuing laceration went to the bone without any pain, it was that clean of a bite, and the Piranha went to a good home.
Beautiful fish, not for the beginner or the," I think they'll be ok in a 150g for life" crowd.

I got my first piranhas when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I begged my dad for them. So I got 6 dime size red bellies in a 29 gallon!!! I didn't know any better (hey I was a little kid!!) Anyway these grew to be some monsters in that 29 gallon. I grew them out to a good 6-8". Now that I think about it that was insane to have 6 red bellies 6" in a 29 gallon!! I woke up one day and they were all dead....execpt for one!! I rarely ever did any water changes I always would just top off the tank or add some PH up to tank(Probaly gonna get flamed for that, but I didn't know any better!!!)

The one that lived stayed living for another six years. We ended up moving to a bigger house and it ended up in the basement. My dad took care of it but I rarely paid any attention to it cause around that time I just got my drivers license and a new car. So this red belly used to be in the basement with NO lights on at all!! One my dad goes to clean the tank and gets bit by the piranha(He got bit where your pointer finger and the palm meet). He got bit so bad that it bit him down to the bone. He ended up getting a skin graph or some kind of surgery and miss work at GM for 6 months!!! He didn't have any hard feelings toward the piranha and ending up living another 2 years after that!!

My first, and thus far only, piranha was a one eyed red belly that a co worker gave me years ago..It was my introduction into fishkeeping.

Guess I'm not understanding you on this one, how is a 150 not a proper home for a rbp? they rarely hit 12" in captivity. Many experienced P keepers go by the 20-30gal per fish suggestion with no problems.

Nice, and that's great of you to take a 1 eyed monster, most people wouldnt!

Still in the game. Lucifer has a great personality as he ages. Ill have to post a vid sometime of him just cruising around his tank.

Good to hear from th bomber! Been awhile. I'd love to see that vid!
