YOUR FIRST PIRANHA?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've seen 12 inch ternatzis but yeah, the size in story sounds fishy but so insignificant

Yea I noticed that too, a 150 is a beautiful home for rbp imo.

The one major issue I have with Piranhas, is that they are VERY boring fish when they arent feeding.

They just hover there in their groups (shoals?) barely moving almost frozen. And thats not very exciting. I want to see fish swimming! Fins flapping! Movement, drama, curiosity!

There is all kinds of drama in my cichlid tanks

I've found that between babies to pre adult 1"-5" they are active, mine are all @ the 6-8" mark and they are still active, they play all day, sometimes Chase eachother but its also cool when they just hang, I think the tank variations make a difference, for instance I have a lot of dw and hiding spots, plus very dark Bw and dim light, maybe their just more comfortable? When they were 2-5" I hated the constant aggression and nipping!

4 rbp and 24 black skirt tetras. Oddly the black skirts were there to cycle and added rbp to the tank that were 1". After a year the rbp were 6-8" and only lost 5 black skirts tetras and all but 2 I found the dead fish. Lost my fear of piranha after that

Huh interesting, I haven't kept other fish with my shoal, I dont have room to quarentine dithers atm but someday I would like too. And to make this clear are you saying cuz they didn't eat the tetras you found then boring and got rid of them?

Weird, I've had many other fish and compared to rbp and rhoms I find everyday lfs fish a tad boring, but if you make a good tank for them its never boring. I just like the idea of creating and maintaining a small world for animals to grow and live in, and when done properly long term its a great feeling! like a bio dome, horrible/awesome movie BTW.

If I learned one thing about rbp in the year I had them, they seem to respect anything in the tank prior to adding them. Once settled in anything added after is food. Even adding piranhas I had success and failure try to just introduce into an established setup and they became food. I took all rbp out of tank and reshaped and added new fish and then reintroduced rbp and no problems. By the end I had rbp, zebra and giant danios, plecos and multiple types of tetras.

I'll try to dig up a link to a tank in France with hundreds of different fish and minimal losses

I feel like if all the MFK community saw this tank the piranha forum would light up

I've never had trouble like that with my shoal, but they've been together since they were very young! I have moved them 2x since I've had them, when they have hiding spots they feel much more comfortable, having a place to retreat as opposed to just smacking the glass! I've had a giant pleco with them once and they didn't even consider a fight, had to get rid of it due to massive bio load.

That is a great tank and at 1700liters that is massive, love it'd Thx for the links man, I love reading and seeing peoples setups!

Guess I'm not understanding you on this one, how is a 150 not a proper home for a rbp? they rarely hit 12" in captivity. Many experienced P keepers go by the 20-30gal per fish suggestion with no problems.

Nice, and that's great of you to take a 1 eyed monster, most people wouldnt!

Good to hear from th bomber! Been awhile. I'd love to see that vid!

I guess I wasn't clear, I didn't just have one. Experienced keepers know you dont keep one...Five or more. A 150g would be minimum for five, but this isn't the thread for that discussion....again.
Sorry OP for the derail.

I know a few experienced piranhas keepers that have a solo rbp! Check out mikes little guy, he also has a fantastic shoal of caribes and a stunner blue diamond rhom!

No need to apologize, you didn't derail my thread, I guess we all have different opinions when it comes to Piranhas!

i have never owned any piranha the closest thing would be my dovii and jag lol but i think i could have a big shoal in my 240 what you think F1

Oh yeah, a 240 would be amazing! You could easily do 10-12! A dozen rbp would blow your mind during feeding time, they'd absolutely rip anything to shreds in a matter of seconds! Do it!
