Saw the female drop the eggs and the male fertilizing them last night....they were doing the dance. A lot of the eggs were getting eaten by other females in the tank. Kinda pissed about that, but I currently have 46 eggs tumbling in my home made tumbler and another female holding in a 15 gal with one male and a lot of hiding spots. Didnt think they would breed this quick for me, but I'm glad! Will continue to update this thread!

Chris

great! get some pics when you can! I know I can't stand watching the others get in the middle of spawning, but it sounds like your getting plenty of fertilized eggs still, let us know how the fry turns out how did you make that homemade tumbler??

I have a 90 gal with approx 25 Kenyi and 25 Zebra Obliquidens. Noticed that one of my Female Z.O.'s is holding last night....put her in my 15 gal for a couple weeks before stripping her. I would imagine that it could be a hybrid (definitely NOT wanted), but wanted to know what others thought. I know they are from two different lakes in Africa, but they are also cichlids (breed like rabbits!). Any input is greatly appreciated...will be separating tank today with acrylic divider!

Thank you!

Chris

like always say!! if you dont want your hybrid i'll take it, i one thank just for hybrids,,,,,and wont sell or give to anyone so it wont hit the population fish keepers like use....keep in mind if you like to move them:)

The homemade tumbler (1st I ever made) is made out of a 20 oz bottle. I cut the bottom off about 2" from the bottom. I then drilled some small holes in the bottom of the bottle so water could pass through to keep the eggs in motion when the airstone is on. Then I placed some pantyhose on top of the cut off bottom portion. I squeezed the top portion (right side up) inside the bottom portion so the panty hose would screen out any larger debris. Drilled a hole in the cap so that the airline tubing would fit through and connected the airstone inside the top of the bottle. Twisted the cap on (not all the way - air would take over the whole bottle). Plugged in the aerator and it worked. So, I twisted the cap off and dumped the eggs in...twisted cap back on and they were tumbling. Have had them going two days and have lost some, but I did start with 116 in there! Probably down to 100 or so. Will get pics up when I get the chance!

Here is one that I just started to use this morning, has 3 yellow lab fry in it...made 3 of them so far. Takes about 15 mins ea! Hopefully they work out. The one pictured is a 32 oz Powerade Bottle. Any bottle will really do. I really need to get a gang valve so I can just hook them all up to the 1 aerator. I'm sure I will have some kinks to work out, but hopefully I will get some fry out of it. The Zebra Obliquidens are breeding like crazy...at least one a day for the past week! It looks like I have 3 males and about 22 females. I'm ok with that! I just hope I dont lose any of the males! Will let everyone know how this works out for me.

Well...lost all the eggs to fungus when I checked this morning. It was all of the females 1st time with eggs and I did strip them after 1 day. I have three females holding in a 15 gallon right now and probably another one or two that will drop their eggs today in the 90 gal. We'll just have to see how it goes...will be using the tumblers once the eggs turn into fry. I think it was just too early to strip the eggs.

I make a point to wait at least 14 days to strip the females bc of the problem with fungus and them just not making it so I've had great results waiting 18-21 days...

Yeah, with my yellow labs I usually wait 10 days and the fry all make it. It was the Z.O.'s 1st batch so I figured I should strip right away, since they would most likely be eaten anyways. The females would be in ok shape since they could eat again right away (instead of waiting at least 10 days with NO food). Next batch I will wait for at least 10 days. If those dont turn out, I will wait longer the next time! Thanks for everyone's input/experiences. I truly do want to hear what others have tried and how they have turned out, so thank you!

Chris

2 females ate their eggs...but there was another holding this morning in my 90. So right now I have 2 females holding!

Chris

Waited 6 days for the female to hold and then stripped her...got 7 small fry and 4 unfertilized eggs. Thinking she must have lost a lot to unfertilized eggs or a fungus. Currently have another female holding this morning - put her in the 15 gallon by herself. Going to wait 8 days this next time to see if the fry are a bit bigger....hopefully she will not eat them in those two extra days. Will keep you updated!
